The scheme, estimated to cost the government \u20b915,000 crore, was part of efforts to trim BSNL\u2019s employee expenses, which accounted for \u20b98,304 crore\u201443% of its operating revenue in FY24. The government hopes to make BSNL profitable by FY27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opposition from Employee Unions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employee unions strongly oppose the VRS, blaming systemic inefficiencies rather than the workforce for BSNL\u2019s struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>P. Abhimanyu<\/strong>, General Secretary of BSNL Employees Union, criticized the government for shifting accountability onto employees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M.S. Adasul<\/strong>, General Secretary of Sanchar Nigam Executives Association, urged the DoT to address internal challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These groups have engaged with BSNL management and the DoT to halt the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Past VRS and Financial Outlook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BSNL implemented a VRS in 2020, which aimed for 30,000-35,000 employees but saw nearly 80,000 opt for the scheme, significantly reducing the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite challenges, BSNL has shown signs of recovery:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Losses for April-September 2024 reduced to \u20b92,785 crore, compared to \u20b92,951 crore a year earlier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revenue from operations grew by 10.4%, reaching \u20b99,235 crore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The company plans to capture 25% of the mobile subscriber market by 2025, emphasizing long-term growth and competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has temporarily halted a second voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) after strong resistance from employee unions.
