From May to September 2024, Bengaluru saw an astonishing 80 lakh traffic violations captured by AI-based enforcement cameras. These cameras, installed at over 50 junctions, detected an average of 5,687 violations per hour, highlighting the city’s growing road safety concerns. The data was shared during the 25th SAFE Annual Convention, organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Violations and Peak Hours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The AI-based cameras recorded an average of 57,942 violations per day, with peak traffic hours between 8 am and 9 am registering the highest number of cases. Wrong-way driving was the most frequent violation, with 2,300 cases flagged per day. Other common violations included red light running, stop line infractions, and failure to wear helmets or seat belts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accident-Prone Areas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Bengaluru\u2019s traffic police also identified the top 10 police stations that reported<\/a> the highest number of traffic violations. These include Basavanagudi, Halasur, Adugodi, Jayanagara, and Mico Layout, among others. With a comprehensive AI-based system in place, violators are promptly sent challans through the Smart Enforcement Centre, which monitors violations using sensors and advanced traffic technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Traffic Violations Report (FTVR) System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In addition to AI-based monitoring, the Bengaluru traffic police recorded 1.43 crore traffic violations through the Field Traffic Violations Report (FTVR) machines in 2024. January recorded the highest number of violations, at 50 lakh. The FTVR machines helped enforce contactless penalties, with an average of 67,335 violations recorded per day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Road Accident Data<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The city has also grappled with road accidents over the last six years. Bengaluru saw 27,800 road accidents\u2014both fatal and non-fatal\u2014since 2018. This year alone, 497 fatal and 2,419 non-fatal accidents were reported until July. The highest number of fatal accidents occurred in 2023, with 5,998 cases. Accident-prone areas include K R Pura, Yelahanka, Kamakshipalya, Peenya, and Devanahalli Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
