In a big relief to daily suburban commuters dependent on low-cost rail travel, the Central Railway zone has reverted<\/a> passenger fares to pre-pandemic costs in line with old ticket prices, after consistently facing public pressure on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fares have dropped approximately 40-50% from increased express category rates charged since mid-pandemic when passenger trains were discontinued during the nationwide Covid lockdown in 2020 until services finally resumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Major Financial Relief for Daily Office-Goers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ordinary non-air conditioned second class fares for routes now operated by Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMU) and Diesel Electrical Multiple Units (DEMU) trains have come down by 50% for many sectors compared to costs over last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance, some suburban stretches have seen prices decrease from Rs 65 earlier<\/a> to Rs 30 now – half of what daily travelers were shelling out additionally due to the pandemic-triggered realignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
