Bank Of Baroda Agents Are Stealing Money From Customer's Accounts Via Mobile Banking App\" class=\"wp-image-1274436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Untitled-design-18-1-1-1280x720-1-1024x576-1280x720-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Untitled-design-18-1-1-1280x720-1-1024x576-1280x720-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Untitled-design-18-1-1-1280x720-1-1024x576-1280x720-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Untitled-design-18-1-1-1280x720-1-1024x576-1280x720-1.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bob Agents Steal Customers Money From Their Accounts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internal audit reports and records of the bank have revealed that some of the agents did steal 2.2 million rupees ($27,000) from 362 customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scandal came to light after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2023\/7\/11\/indias-bank-of-baroda-misused-customer-data-to-flog-app\">expose<\/a> by The Reporters\u2019 Collective (TRC) and Al Jazeera, which showed the bank\u2019s employees had linked unauthorized mobile numbers to customer accounts that were missing a registered mobile number to onboard them on the bank\u2019s new mobile banking app, bob World.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It gets interesting as these unauthorized mobile numbers were of bank staff, managers, guards, their relatives and bank agents in remote areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this story, they warned that the bank\u2019s underhand tactics, devised under pressure to boost registrations on its app, could lead to identity theft and pose a grave risk to the money of customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the bank admitted this in its internal emails saying \u201cIt is a fraud-prone area,\u201d multiple emails about the bogus mobile numbers noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Did This Happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the latest development, the internal documents of the bank\u2019s head office acknowledge this malpractice now further showing that the bank\u2019s agents, called business correspondents, have withdrawn tens of thousands of rupees from customers\u2019 accounts by using mobile banking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be specific, Six customers have lost upwards of 110,000 rupees ($1,330) each, whereas one lost almost 177,000 rupees ($2,140).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This also revealed that one of the agents stole more than 390,000 rupees ($4,750).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to this revelation, the bank\u2019s head office has asked the managers concerned to \u201cinitiate necessary action for recovery and restoration of money in customer accounts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also the admission of fraud that happened after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country\u2019s central bank, ordered an audit following The Reporters\u2019 Collective-Al Jazeera investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RBI Banned Bob In Registering New Customers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Tuesday, the RBI said that it has directed the Bank of Baroda to stop registering new customers on bob World because of \u201ccertain material supervisory concerns observed in the manner of onboarding of their customers onto this mobile application\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, the Bank of Baroda verified documents of about 422,000 accounts that were suspected to be wrongfully registered on the app by the bank staff, in its nationwide audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was done by the bank\u2019s branch staff as they audited these accounts spread over nearly 7,000 branches across the country on July 29 and 30, with each employee auditing documents of another branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its final audit reports have duly pointed out discrepancies, indicating proper scrutiny at a higher level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further, these reports established the shoddy nature of the internal audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears that this audit was not so much about detecting wrongdoing as about covering it up as Many bank employees told The Reporters\u2019 Collective (TRC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further adding that under instructions from their regional office, they arranged and forged documents for the audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe bank knows it\u2019s in the wrong [with regard to bob World enrolment].
