looking to be awarded a licence to be able to start operations in the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is satellite internet?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satellite internet differs from the traditional internet which depends on cables or copper wires in that it uses signals from satellites orbiting the Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This makes it ideal for providing internet connectivity to areas where traditional internet (including fibre-cable) services are not yet available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service is facilitated through dedicated channels that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/technology\/news\/story\/elon-musk-starlink-offer-satellite-internet-services-in-india-2425941-2023-08-24\">installed <\/a>at home or on their remote stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Starlink&#8217;s case, services rely on the constellation of LEO (Low-Earth Orbit) Starlink satellites operated by SpaceX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far it has launched over 4,000 satellites with more on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Decisive meeting soon to be held<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SpaceX, the parent company of Starlink, had applied for the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence with the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources indicate that DoT officials are likely to meet on September 20 to deliberate on whether to grant the required licence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starlink presently offers its services in 32 countries worldwide with ambitions to enter India for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Previous efforts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Audaciously, it had begun taking pre-orders in the country even without having procured any licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Promptly thereafter it received a warning from the DoT along with orders to apply for a licence to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this, it had to refund money to those who had paid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starlink&#8217;s official website still notes that it awaits &#8220;regulatory approval.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Govt reasoning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One among people close to the development said, \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to encourage any company to give services without licences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We experienced it in the case of Skype, we couldn\u2019t bring the company into a licensing regime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, it is out of our ambit, not following any regulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Companies possessing licence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that Starlink is the third company to apply for the GMPCS licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present only the Airtel-backed OneWeb and Jio\u2019s satellite arm, Jio Space Technology have been able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbytesapp.com\/news\/science\/starlink-s-satellite-internet-could-arrive-in-india-soon\/story\">procure <\/a>it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After getting the licence, Starlink will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/business\/2023\/aug\/24\/starlink-to-soon-provide-broadband-services-in-india-2608266.html\">need <\/a>the satellite spectrum from DoT\u2019s wireless planning and coordination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department will likely go the auction route to allocate satcom spectrum, something telecom companies support while satellite companies <a
