Tata Play, a direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, announced that it has commenced broadcasting television channels using its dedicated GSAT-24 satellite, leased from the Indian space agency ISRO. The GSAT-24 satellite was launched specifically<\/a> for Tata Play (formerly TataSky) in June of the previous year, with the intention of expanding its channel capacity to 900 channels and ensuring coverage across the entirety of India, including remote areas like the Andaman Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ISRO’s Satellite Success: Tata Play’s Milestone in DTH Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the launch, ISRO took the necessary time to position the satellite in the desired 36,000-kilometer geosynchronous orbit. The satellite underwent testing by ISRO before being handed over to Tata Play, which subsequently conducted its own tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tata Play’s MD & CEO, Harit Nagpal, expressed excitement about this development, noting that it would allow the company to carry 900 channels, including regional and Gyanwani channels launched by the government. This expansion from the existing 600 channels will not only improve signal reception but also enhance channel capacity. He emphasized that this achievement makes Tata Play the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tata Play has now added its third domestically developed satellite to its DTH service, catering to all recent customers via this fresh satellite. This achievement was facilitated by the collaboration between Tata Play, a joint venture involving the Tata Group and 21st Century Fox, and ISRO’s commercial subsidiary NSIL (New Space India Ltd).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSAT-24: A Game-Changer in India’s Telecommunications Landscape<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NSIL Chairman and Managing Director Radhakrishnan Durairaj highlighted that GSAT-24 is the first demand-driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL following space sector reforms. This satellite is expected to advance domestic broadcasting services with advanced digital TV transmission capabilities, reflecting the success of the “Make In India” initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ISRO Chairman S Somanath described this as a significant achievement that signifies a revolution in India’s telecommunications space. It showcases India’s aerospace capabilities and marks a successful entry into the demand-driven mission segment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSAT-24, a 4-tonne 24-Ku band communication satellite, was specifically designed by ISRO to fulfill Tata Play’s DTH application needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
