{"id":1247325,"date":"2023-07-09T05:20:03","date_gmt":"2023-07-08T23:50:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1247325"},"modified":"2023-07-09T05:22:13","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T23:52:13","slug":"rs-5600-crore-bonanza-for-these-flipkart-employees-esop-payout-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/rs-5600-crore-bonanza-for-these-flipkart-employees-esop-payout-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Rs 5600 Crore Bonanza For These Flipkart Employees: ESOP Payout Announced!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Employees of Flipkart will receive a one-time cash payout from a $700 Mn employee stock option plan (ESOP) buyback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Flipkart-Banner-Opt-2.jpg\" alt=\"Rs 5600 Crore Bonanza For These Flipkart Employees: ESOP Payout Announced!\" class=\"wp-image-1247343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Flipkart-Banner-Opt-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Flipkart-Banner-Opt-2-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Flipkart-Banner-Opt-2-768x357.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Separation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is part of the process of its separation from fintech giant PhonePe later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flipkart <a href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/2023\/07\/flipkart-to-payout-700-million-to-staffers-for-phonepe?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts\">acquired <\/a>PhonePe in 2016 for $20 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter operated as a subsidiary till December 2022 when both companies announced full separation of ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Previous buybacks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ecommerce giant has conducted several ESOP buybacks before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018 it bought shares worth $500 Mn from its employees during its acquisition by Walmart for $18 Bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then in 2021, it bought back shares worth $85 Mn as part of its $3.6 Bn funding round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The current payout<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record date for the buyback has been set on December 23, 2022, and the payment would depend on ESOPs employees held as on that date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will only be on all vested options for current and former employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current employees will also get benefits based on their unvested options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The payouts will be made by July 31 and the same was communicated to beneficiary employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Share value<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the former and current employees eligible will receive $43.67, or around INR 3,615 per unit of ESOP they hold in Flipkart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is to compensate for the loss of PhonePe\u2019s value in the stock option since it is separating from the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beneficiaries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 24,000 employees, including Flipkart and Myntra staff who have left will be given the cash payout based on the number of stock options they have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The payouts to each employee will still be subject to applicable withholding taxes and other tax rules in the respective countries of ESOP holders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to this buyback, Flipkart\u2019s valuation will see a drop from $37.6 Bn to $33 Bn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PhonePe&#8217;s future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its separation from Flipkart it has been in the <a href=\"https:\/\/yourstory.com\/2023\/07\/flipkart-to-payout-700-million-to-staffers-for-phonepe?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts\">process <\/a>of a fundraise of $1.1 billion from the likes of TVS Capital Funds and General Atlantic, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has since <a href=\"https:\/\/inc42.com\/buzz\/flipkart-700-mn-esop-buyback-phonepe-split\/\">raised <\/a>$850 Mn in multiple tranches from its largest shareholder Walmart, along with investors such as General Atlantic and Ribbit Capital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Employees of Flipkart will receive a one-time cash payout from a $700 Mn employee stock option plan (ESOP) buyback.
