testify before U.S. District Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Facing deadline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft struck the deal 17 months ago in hopes of expanding its video game presence beyond Xbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is trying to close its proposed acquisition by July 18th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it fails to do so, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23768244\/ftc-microsoft-activision-blizzard-case-news-announcements\">risks <\/a>having to pay $3 billion in breakup fees to Activision Blizzard or has to renegotiate new terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Microsoft defends<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue has to do with concerns over Microsoft gaining a monopoly through the merger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerns have also been raised that popular gaming titles would be kept exclusive to one gaming platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nadella has <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/microsoft-activision-blizzard-satya-nadella-xbox-playstation-7cca7c865a93951e5354cc47945c258a?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts\">defended <\/a>that his goal is to get Activision games on as many platforms as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He assured the court that Microsoft has no interest in shutting out PlayStation by making popular Activision games exclusive to its own Xbox system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Accusing rival Sony<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft also tried to accuse Sony of trying to sabotage the deal to preserve its giant lead in the console market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nadella said PlayStation maker Sony has defined the video game market as one focused on making premium games exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No incentive to keep exclusive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activision CEO Bobby Kotick also testified, asserting that there\u2019s no business incentive to deprive rivals like Sony of the popular Activision game Call of Duty, because such a move would alienate the fanbase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Removing the game from PlayStation \u201dwould cause serious reputational damage,\u201d Kotick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that making a subpar version for PlayStation would bring \u201cvitriol from gamers\u201d and is not something Activision developers would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sony\u2019s concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Sony gaming executive Jim Ryan said he initially expressed little concern about the acquisition after private conversations with Kotick and Xbox chief Phil Spencer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However he later changed his stance, believing that Microsoft would leverage Call of Duty\u2019s popularity to disadvantage PlayStation, whose players might get a more \u201cdegraded experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe harm to (Sony) arises from gamers deserting our platform and going to Xbox,\u201d said Ryan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commitment to Switch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft highlighted commitments it has already made to make the franchise available on Nintendo\u2019s Switch console and a Nvidia gaming subscription service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft pledged to provide the game to Switch for 10 <a href=\"https:\/\/www-livemint-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/www.livemint.com\/news\/world\/microsoft-vs-ftc-highlights-of-the-courtroom-battle-in-the-microsoft-activision-deal-us-ftc\/amp-11687912963336.html\">years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This
