{"id":1246371,"date":"2023-06-19T07:28:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T01:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1246371"},"modified":"2023-06-19T07:29:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-19T01:59:00","slug":"this-new-tool-can-detect-ai-generated-academic-papers-with-99-accuracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/this-new-tool-can-detect-ai-generated-academic-papers-with-99-accuracy\/","title":{"rendered":"This New Tool Can Detect AI-Generated Academic Papers With 99% Accuracy!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An AI detector developed by the University of Kansas can detect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ariannajohnson\/2023\/06\/07\/new-tool-can-tell-if-something-is-ai-written-with-99-accuracy\/?sh=512ce2705ed4\">AI-generated content<\/a> in academic papers with a 99% accuracy rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Artificial-Intelligence-Banner-Opt-1.jpg\" alt=\"This New Tool Can Detect AI-Generated Academic Papers With 99% Accuracy!\" class=\"wp-image-1246698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Artificial-Intelligence-Banner-Opt-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Artificial-Intelligence-Banner-Opt-1-300x140.jpg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Artificial-Intelligence-Banner-Opt-1-768x357.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the few detectors on the market developed specifically for academic writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OpenAI\u2019s chatbot, ChatGPT, was opened to the public in November 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It rapidly gained popularity, having surpassed the million-users mark in less than a week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People used it for things like creating code and writing essays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, its popularity led to scrutiny over whether students were writing genuine papers by themselves or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several schools either indefinitely or temporarily banned the software, including New York Public Schools, Seattle Public Schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The process of detection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of researchers selected 64 perspectives (a type of article) and used them to make 128 articles using ChatGPT, which was then used to train the AI detector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The detector could detect with 100% accuracy what were human-created articles from AI-generated ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also had a 92% accuracy rate for identifying specific paragraphs within the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lead author statement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight now, there are some pretty glaring problems with AI writing,&#8221; lead author Heather Desaire said in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the biggest problems is that it assembles text from many sources and there isn&#8217;t any kind of accuracy check\u2014it&#8217;s kind of like the game Two Truths and a Lie.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AI detectors and accuracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that AI detectors have not proven to be 100% accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a University of California at Davis student alleged she was falsely accused of cheating with AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pleaded her case and ultimately won, using time stamps to prove she wrote the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is that this wasn\u2019t the only time educators falsely labeled assignments as AI-generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Existing programs and services<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several programs which promise to identify AI-written content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TurnitIn<\/strong>: An AI detection tool for papers which shows an overall percentage of the amount of work AI software generated within the paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company claims 98% accuracy at spotting AI-written work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Copyleaks<\/strong>: This software can detect AI content in multiple languages, including Spanish, Russian, French, Dutch and German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It claims to have an AI detection accuracy rate of 99%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OpenAI\u2019s Classifier<\/strong>: Though these are the same makers behind ChatGPT, the tool isn\u2019t very accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a success rate of around 26% and incorrectly labels human work as AI work 9% of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is claimed that its accuracy increases as the length of the text increases along with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise It\u2019s \u201cvery unreliable\u201d on texts with 1,000 characters or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ariannajohnson\/2023\/06\/07\/new-tool-can-tell-if-something-is-ai-written-with-99-accuracy\/?sh=78fcca275ed4\">itself <\/a>warns against using this tool as the primary decision making tool and suggests using it along with other methods of detection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An AI detector developed by the University of Kansas can detect AI-generated content in academic papers with a 99% accuracy rate.
