{"id":1242835,"date":"2023-02-19T10:06:42","date_gmt":"2023-02-19T04:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1242835"},"modified":"2023-02-19T10:07:13","modified_gmt":"2023-02-19T04:37:13","slug":"616-indians-quit-citizenship-every-day-in-12-months-2-25-lakh-indians-renounced-indian-citizenship-28-higher-yoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/616-indians-quit-citizenship-every-day-in-12-months-2-25-lakh-indians-renounced-indian-citizenship-28-higher-yoy\/","title":{"rendered":"616 Indians Quit Citizenship Every Day In 12 Months: 2.25 Lakh Indians Renounced Indian Citizenship (28% Higher YoY)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While responding to a question in the upper house of Parliament Rajya Sabha, the Indian Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar provided data for the number of Indians who have renounced their Indian citizenship from 2011 to 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Indian-Passport.jpeg\" alt=\"616 Indians Quit Citizenship Every Day In 12 Months: 2.25 Lakh Indians Renounced Indian Citizenship (28% Higher YoY)\" class=\"wp-image-1243016\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Indian-Passport.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Indian-Passport-300x140.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Indian-Passport-768x357.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the Government data, a total of more than 16 lakh Indians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneycontrol.com\/news\/india\/2-25-lakh-people-renounced-indian-citizenship-in-2022-an-increase-of-over-60000-from-2021-10043131.html\">renounced<\/a> their Indian citizenship in the aforementioned period, with the highest number seen in 2022 and the lowest in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union minister provided the data for every year since 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2011, a total of 1,22,819 Indians gave up their domestic citizenship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2012, the count decreased to 1,20,923.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2013, the count was seen increasing sharply to 1,31,405, while<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2014, the total number of Indians renouncing their citizenship dropped slightly to 1,29,328.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2015, the number rose again to the 1.31 lakh range at 1,31,489.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2016, the count jumped drastically to 1,41,603, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2017, the total number sobered up largely and fell back to 1,33,049.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2018, a total of 1,34,561 Indians gave away their domestic citizenship, while&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2019, the count surged to 1,44,017.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2020, the total count was seen at the least in the 2011-2022 period, with only 85,256 Indians renouncing their Indian citizenship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2021, this number skyrocketed to 1,63,370, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2022, the total count rallied to a whopping 2,25,620 Indians giving away their citizenship, the highest in the entire period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon the ongoing large number of job cuts in the US giants, the Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf these, a certain percentage is likely to be Indian nationals on H-1B and L1 visas.
