{"id":1242423,"date":"2023-02-09T10:23:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-09T04:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1242423"},"modified":"2023-02-09T10:23:39","modified_gmt":"2023-02-09T04:53:39","slug":"pilot-less-fully-automatic-airplanes-coming-soon-boeing-ceo-reveals-this-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/pilot-less-fully-automatic-airplanes-coming-soon-boeing-ceo-reveals-this-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilot-Less, Fully Automatic Airplanes Coming Soon: Boeing CEO Reveals This Information!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Boeing Co.\u2019s chief executive officer believes that it\u2019s a matter of when \u2014 not if \u2014 self-flying planes will enter commercial aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Military tech commercialized&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-1280x720-4-1024x576-1-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Pilot-Less, Fully Automatic Airplanes Coming Soon: Boeing CEO Reveals This Information!\" class=\"wp-image-1242569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-1280x720-4-1024x576-1-2.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-1280x720-4-1024x576-1-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Capture-1280x720-4-1024x576-1-2-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The planemaker\u2019s autonomous flight technology was initially being developed for military applications but will also debut in commercial aviation aircraft in the future, said Dave Calhoun, CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAutonomy is going to come to all of the airplanes eventually,\u201d Calhoun said at an event commemorating the final delivery of its iconic 747 jumbo jet in Everett, Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proof of concept<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe future of autonomy is real for civil aviation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we have to prove that it can be commercialized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope to prove to ourselves that this kind of technology can come to the marketplace\u201d, said the CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Humans irreplaceable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flying today&#8217;s high-tech passenger jets is often a matter of setting up and overseeing their autopilot and other automated systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, aviation as a whole is still far away from a point where computer systems can fully replace human pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Airbus&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boeing rival Airbus, meanwhile, has been testing a suite of advanced autonomous flight systems it&#8217;s calling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/02\/03\/fully-autonomous-flight-planes\">DragonFly<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DragonFly is designed to enable automatic landings in bad weather, handle in-flight emergencies (like an incapacitated human pilot), and ease pilots&#8217; workload while taxiing around complicated airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Xwing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not just that, there is also a Silicon Valley startup called Xwing which is working on gate-to-gate autonomous cargo flights using modified Cessna Grand Caravans remotely overseen by staffers on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The startup has made progress, having recently landed a contract to work alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), NASA and others to research the best ways to integrate autonomous aircraft into complex airspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reducing role of pilots<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that this nascent technology isn&#8217;t actually going to operate without human intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s simply that increased automation could lead to relaxation of the two pilot-rule for commercial flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pushback<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However there is resistance from pilots, not only over safety fears but also in part because of the potential risk to their livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contradiction, however, others predict that adoption of autonomous flight technology will create new jobs to support such systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is one key factor to also consider- how many passengers would actually be okay with flying aboard an aircraft with one or no human pilots?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amazon layoffs to Boeing&#8217;s benefit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boeing is seeking to benefit from layoffs at technology companies to add to its ranks of skilled workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had 15,000 hires last year. We\u2019ll have another 10,000 this year,\u201d Calhoun said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest companies to conduct layoffs was Amazon, from which \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-31\/boeing-ceo-sees-self-flying-tech-coming-to-commercial-aircraft?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">many<\/a>\u201d of the software engineers will be onboarded at Boeing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boeing Co.\u2019s chief executive officer believes that it\u2019s a matter of when \u2014 not if \u2014 self-flying planes will enter commercial aviation.
