{"id":1241318,"date":"2023-01-05T12:40:42","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T07:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1241318"},"modified":"2023-01-05T12:41:18","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T07:11:18","slug":"pnb-sbi-will-not-be-privatized-niti-ayog-shares-list-of-banks-that-wont-be-sold-to-private-firms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/pnb-sbi-will-not-be-privatized-niti-ayog-shares-list-of-banks-that-wont-be-sold-to-private-firms\/","title":{"rendered":"PNB, SBI Will Not Be Privatized: NITI Ayog Shares List Of Banks That Won&#8217;t Be Sold To Private Firms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Preparations are being made for the eventual privatisation of banking institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-1-4-1280x720-1-1-1024x576-1.jpeg\" alt=\"PNB, SBI Will Not Be Privatized: NITI Ayog Shares List Of Banks That Won't Be Sold To Private Firms\" class=\"wp-image-1241319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-1-4-1280x720-1-1-1024x576-1.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-1-4-1280x720-1-1-1024x576-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-1-4-1280x720-1-1-1024x576-1-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Niti Aayog has listed the candidates that would be privatised and those that will be left out of the sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is considering privatising two banks and one general insurance firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This plan was announced in the budget address by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Banks to NOT be privatised<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In August of 2019, four out of ten banks were consolidated by the government, bringing the total number of public sector banks down from 27 to 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of their integration is still waiting, though it may be finished soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Finance Ministry has recommended to leave out these banks from the sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A government official has shared that none involved in the government&#8217;s bank consolidation is eligible to participate in the privatisation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>List of excluded candidates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The NitiI Aayog-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnaindia.com\/business\/report-bank-privatisation-sbi-pnb-to-go-private-here-s-list-shared-by-niti-aayog-3014919\/amp\">released<\/a> list of excluded banks comprises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Punjab National Bank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Union Bank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Canara Bank<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State Bank of India<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indian Bank&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bank of Baroda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Government officials have said that they have no plans to privatise these financial institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The privatisation of PSBs can be done through divestment of government stake to a wider base of investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Right step forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanjiv Chadha, managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO), Bank of Baroda (BoB) said the banking structure needs to be different from the one we have today, keeping in mind the aim to become a $5-trillion economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe government must look at privatisation. Making a start by privatising two PSBs is the right approach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rajkiran Rai G, MD, National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), said the privatisation concept comes at two points \u2014 PSBs need capital, and the efficiencies of banks are being discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their performance so far coming to growth, efficiency, or profitability has been good, thanks to consolidation of PSB space and the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Private not always superior<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Soma Sankara Prasad, MD and CEO, UCO Bank, said that the common belief is that whatever is private is efficient and good as opposed to public entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/finance\/privatisation-of-psbs-via-divestment-of-wider-base-of-investors-bankers-122122101136_1.html\">not <\/a>always true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prasad said, \u201cEfficiency is ownership-agnostic. If you create the right conditions for someone to function efficiently, things will be good \u2014 whether it is a public or private enterprise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He opines that privatisation is a call the govt has to make keeping in mind divestment, raising resources, and reducing its presence in the banking space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Preparations are being made for the eventual privatisation of banking institutions.
