{"id":1240961,"date":"2022-12-22T12:45:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T07:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/?p=1240961"},"modified":"2022-12-22T12:46:03","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T07:16:03","slug":"byjus-buying-childrens-phone-numbers-threatening-parents-to-buy-their-courses-national-commission-for-protection-of-child-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/byjus-buying-childrens-phone-numbers-threatening-parents-to-buy-their-courses-national-commission-for-protection-of-child-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Byju&#8217;s Buying Children&#8217;s Phone Numbers, Threatening Parents To Buy Their Courses: National Commission for Protection of Child Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said that it has been informed that Byju&#8217;s is allegedly buying phone numbers of children and their parents which it is using to threaten them that their future will be ruined if they don&#8217;t buy their courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-design-1-3.jpeg\" alt=\"Byju's Buying Children's Phone Numbers, Threatening Parents To Buy Their Courses: National Commission for Protection of Child Rights\" class=\"wp-image-1240967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-design-1-3.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-design-1-3-300x140.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/trak.in\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Untitled-design-1-3-768x357.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Predatory practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo ssid that the company targets first-generation learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will initiate action and if required, will make a report and write to the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission had earlier summoned Byju&#8217;s CEO Byju Raveendran to appear in person on December 23 over alleged malpractice of hard selling and misselling of its courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Harassment, threats, deception<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It had taken action based on a news report that the sales team was indulging in malpractices to lure parents to buy their courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news report also mentioned that some customers claimed they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/byjus-allegedly-buying-phone-numbers-of-kids-threatening-parents-ncpcr-101671543237700.html?utm_campaign=fullarticle&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=inshorts\">exploited <\/a>and deceived, and had put their savings and futures in jeopardy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NCPCR added that the news report further alleged that the edtech company had been actively tricking customers to enter into loan-based agreements for courses which may not be refunded even if the customers asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Powers held by the Commission<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It said in a statement, &#8220;Under Section 14 of CPCR Act,2005, the Commission has all the powers of a Civil Court trying a suit under the Civil Procedure Code, 1908 and particular, in respect of the following matters-&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(a) summoning and enforcing the attendance of any person and examining him on oath;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(b) discovery and production of any document;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(c) receiving evidence on affidavits;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(d) requisitioning any public record or copy thereof from any court or office; and&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(e) issuing commissions for the examination of witnesses or documents.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said that it has been informed that Byju&#8217;s is allegedly buying phone numbers of children and their parents which it is using to threaten them that their future will be ruined if they don&#8217;t buy their courses.
