London based Times Higher Education, which is the leading publication on news related to higher education, has shared the ranking of the best institutions in the world.

In a major surprise, IISc, Bengaluru has emerged as the top-ranked institution in India, beating all IITs and IIMs in the process.

IISc Bengaluru Is India’s Best Institution!

As per Times Higher Education’s 2019 ranking, IISc, Bengaluru has retained its position as India’s #1 educational institution for higher studies.

Founded in 1909 with the support of  Jamshedji Tata and H.H. Sir Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore, IISc offers higher education in the fields of science, engineering, design, and management.

In 1958, IISc was granted the status of Deemed University.

IIT Indore, which made its debut in this prestigious list, is ranked as 2nd best Indian institution. This way, IIT Indore has beaten other olders IITs and IIMs in the list.

IIT Indore Director Pradeep Mathur said “Our efforts in making research the focus of the institute is now reflected in the form of citations and other impact metrics of research,”

Other Indian institutions which have been included in the ranking include: IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur and private institution JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research.

But Indian Institutions Fare Badly In The Overall Ranking!

Not so surprisingly, no Indian institution was able to make in the top 250 list of the best institutions.

India’s best institution: IISc, Bengaluru was placed in the 251-300 ranking bracket, while second best institution: IIT Indore was placed in the 351-400 ranking bracket.

IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee, both were placed in the 401-500 ranking bracket.

Meanwhile IITs of Delhi, Kharagpur, and Kanpur were placed in the 501-600 bracket.

Other Indian institutions which are featured in the ranking are: Savitribai Phule University, Pune, IITs in Guwahati, Madras, Bhubaneswar, and Hyderabad, Delhi Univerity (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), IISER Pune, Jadavpur University, NIT Rourkela, Panjab University, Tezpur University, and Amrita University, BITS Pilani, Aligarh Muslim University, KIIT, VIT, etc.

Which Are World’s Top Institutions?

For the third time in row, University of Oxford has been declared as World’s best University for higher education.

University of Cambridge and Stanford University are at #2 and #3 position.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is at #4 position, while Caltech is at #5.

The rest of the colleges/Universities in the top 10 rank include: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Imperial College London, and University of Chicago.

In Asia, The Tsinghua University in China has been ranked as the best University in Asia, at #22 position, followed by National University of Singapore.
