President Trump: Sorry, No More Permits Under H4 Visa

In its latest filing, The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has informed the US District Court in District of Columbia that all work permits under H4 visa would be canceled in the next three months.

DHS informed that they are “making a solid and swift progress in proposing to remove from its regulations on certain H-4 spouses of H-1B non-immigrants as a class of aliens eligible for employment authorisation”.

How Does This Affect H-1B Visa Holders?

Ex-President Barrack Obama had introduced the concept of H-4 visa, which is a work permit granted to the spouses and children of H-1B visa holders.

Last year, around 64,000 Indians were granted work permits under H-4 visa, so that they too can work alongside primary H-1B visa holder, and support their families.

Now, once work permits under H-4 visa is canceled, then this will mean that spouses and kids of H-1B won’t be able to work in the US.

For many, this will mean the end of the American dream, as they will be forced to return to India.

How Many Indians Will Be Impacted?

Massively.

93% of all H-4 visa approved last year were of Indians, while 5% were of Chinese. Around 1,00,000 Indian families are expected to be directly impacted.

As per the filings made by DHS, the proposal to cancel H-4 visas will be submitted to Office of Management of Budget (OMB), White House in the next 3 months.

And once it reaches the White House, it will be promptly approved by President Trump.

But Why US Is Doing This?

Because of the present President Trump, and his Govt., which believes that a lot of Americans are losing out on employment due to H-4 visas granted to foreign nationals.

Hence, this can be termed as a protectionist measure, which is clearly anti-globalization.

President Trump has been quite vocal about this issue, as we reported in 2017 that spouses of H-1B visa holders will be asked to return to India.

In April this year, reports emerged that President Trump is indeed working on a proposal which will stop work permits under H-4 visa. We had even raised the question that should Indian  Govt. intervene, because thousands of families will be displaced and forced to return to India.

In July, reports emerged that maybe Trump Govt. will allow spouses of H-1B visa to work after all, but then, it seems that it won’t happen.

We will keep you updated, as we receive more updates.
