A new rule pertaining to Air-Conditioners or AC will hit the India: Every AC will have to mandatorily set to 24 Degree Celsius.

The Power Ministry has made a proposal of this rule, and based on approval from Centre, this may be soon become a rule.

Have you started sweating already?

We will soon share the exact reason why this is being made a rule.

Power Ministry: 24 Degree Celsius Should Be The Ideal Temperature!

Govt. wants to save electricity, and Air-Conditioners would be the first electric appliances to face the heat, literally.

Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) was commissioned to conduct a research into this, and based on the inputs received, Power Ministry has proposed to make the default setting of AC to 24 degree celsius.

Now, in the first phase of the program, every new AC would be set to 24 degree, and a massive awareness campaign would be unleashed everywhere, encouraging AC users to keep 24 degree as the default setting.

But, a user can anyways decrease the temperature.

Based on the success of this campaign, Govt. will then make it mandatory for every AC manufacturer to keep the temperature setting between 24 degree and 26 degree.

Once that happens, then there would be no option but to use the AC at minimum 24 degree.

But Why This Rule?

The answer is saving electricity.

There are almost 6% of Indians who are using air-conditioners right now, and every degree of temperature can help us save power.

As per the research by BEE, if 24 degree celsius temperature is kept as default, then India will save 20 billion units of power in a year!

In fact, every one degree of temperature can help us save 6% of overall energy consumed.

Union Power Minister RK Singh explained the rationale, as he said, “Normal human body temperature is approximately 36-37 degree Celsius, but a large number of commercial establishments, hotels and offices maintain a temperature around 18-21 degree Celsius. This is not only uncomfortable but is actually unhealthy. Setting the temperature in the range of 18-21 degree Celsius compels people to wear warm clothing or use blankets; therefore, this is actually wastage of energy.”

In Japan, the Govt. has enforced 28 degree as the default setting of all ACs in the country.

In India, total installed air conditioner capacity is 80 million TR (tonne of refrigerator), which will increase to 250 million TR by 2030. These many ACs will consume 200 GW of power by 2030, and Power Ministry wants some concrete steps to save this energy.
