Xiaomi is on a roll in India. In the smartphones segment, it is proving to be uncatchable in sales numbers. But Xiaomi is not just about smartphones anymore. They have a dynamic portfolio of products which includes power banks, air purifiers, selfie sticks, speakers, headphones, wi-fi routers, VR headset and health monitoring wearables. They have recently added televisions and a body composition scale to the mix.

Xiaomi has stressed again and again that it wants to create a whole ecosystem of services around their products in India. It has committed to investing around Rs 7,000 crores in around 100 Indian startups to that end.

Today, Xiaomi unveiled their streaming music and video services, Mi Music and Mi Video, at a Mi Pop event held in Mumbai. Xiaomi has partnered with local companies in both these endeavours and this can be considered their first step towards a complete hardware and services ecosystem.

Xiaomi has partnered with Hungama to offer more than 10 million music tracks to its users. Xiaomi claims that the Mi Music app is one of the most used by their users. Xiaomi VP, Manu Kumar Jain has shared in a tweet that there are seven million users active on the Mi Music app daily. Users can access music in 13 Indian languages which include the likes of Hindi, Marathi and Bengali, among others.

The app supports Dynamic Lyrics feature which is aimed at Karaoke enthusiasts. Like Google Play Music, the Mi Music will also allow users to play the music from their smartphone’s storage in addition to the streaming music from Hungama. Users will also have the option of jumping to the favourite part of their song with just one click. It is a freemium service.

The app will learn user preferences over the course of time and provide personalised music recommendations based on those. The company is expecting to add more tracks, themes and music videos over the coming months.

The Mi Video ap will also enable users to cast their content to any connected smart TV through DLNA?and Miracast. The app also supports a Picture-in-Picture mode which would enable users to do any other work on their smartphones while simultaneously watching videos.

With the release of these two services, Xiaomi has made its intentions clear regarding the Indian market. Not just content with smartphones and other hardware, Xiaomi is clearly building a complete ecosystem of hardware paired with equally high-quality content and services.
