Amazon Prime Ropes In Salman Khan; Youtube Celebs Will Now Promote Amazon Products

In a smart way, Amazon is now betting on the content revolution to fuel its growth, globally.

In India, Amazon Prime has signed in Salman Khan for exclusive streaming rights, a move which will intensify the on-demand entertainment war in the country.

On the other hand, in the US, Amazon is partnering with Youtube stars to promoting their DIY home improvement products.

In both the cases, it is content which is being used by Amazon to expand their wings, and the gamble is indeed big.

Will it work?

Salman Khan Is On Amazon Prime Now!

This can be regarded as a mini-coup which Amazon Prime has accomplished in India – They have signed in Salman Khan for exclusive streaming rights to his movies, on the digital medium.

As per this deal, every future Salman Khan movie, after its theatrical release, would be now streamed first on Amazon Prime, before their TV premiere. Besides, Amazon Prime has also secured exclusive digital rights to Salman Khan’s earlier movies such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kick, Jai Ho and Hero (which was Salman’s in-house production)

The deal size hasn’t been revealed, but an executive at Amazon Prime have shared that a ‘small fortune’ has been paid.

As per some insider reports, typically digital rights of a single movie from Salman Khan is sold at an approximate value of Rs 65 crore. You can do the maths here…

Nitesh Kripalani, Director and Country Head, Amazon Video India, said, “We, at Amazon Prime Video are elated to announce this epic, groundbreaking global deal with Salman. This is another big step to change the way how Indian customers consume entertainment with Salman’s movies coming first to Prime Video customers, before their television broadcast,”

The deal between Salman Khan and Amazon Prime will kick into effect after Tubelight’s TV premiere, as this movie was part of Rs 500 crore deal which Salman Khan inked with Star TV, which expires in December 2017.

As per some analysts, the deal between Salman Khan and Amazon Prime may be more than what Star TV paid to him.

As per App Annie, Netflix is right now ranked #9, while Amazon Prime Video is ranked #5 in terms of traffic. Can Salman Khan help Amazon Prime to beat Netflix and Hotstar?

Youtube Celebs Will Promote Amazon Products Now

In a somewhat related news, it has been revealed that Amazon will produce a show called ‘Overhaul’, in which some selected Youtube celebrities will take part. The show has been designed to promote Amazon’s products and encourage viewers to buy them.

The concept of the show is a home makeover of the Youtube celebs, which would be showcased as a series of telecasts, on Amazon Prime.

The products used for the makeover of the homes would be sourced from Amazon’s inventory, and thus, directly promoting them.

There would be a total of 6 episodes, and the first show would be featured Youtube celebs Rosanna Pansino, who is a baking star and Teni Panosian, who is a beauty blogger.

Kristiana Helmick, director of home innovation at Amazon said, “The ‘Overhaul’ series is a great opportunity to provide our customers with some curation and guidance when searching through our large selection of products and we continue to look for new and different ways to do that. … This is the first time Amazon has had a co-branded storefront tied to a video series.

Will set a new trend of content collaboration across different channels? Will Google mind it?
