Clashes between Vivo employees and security guards were reported from Vivo’s Greater Noida assembly unit, after the company terminated around 60 employees, allegedly without any intimation.
The company has issued a statement, wherein they have described the terminations as normal restructuring process, due to changing business dynamics.
This is the second instance within a week, wherein unrest and clashes have been reported, largely due to the communication breakdown between the management and the employees. Last week, the entire sales team of Oppo Punjab unit resigned over some statements made by the management.
What is the issue here? Is China vs India issue deliberately being ignited by some anti-social elements? Or there is a mismatch between expectations and reality?
Vivo Employee Clash With Security Guards Over Terminations
As per reports coming in, some contractual employees working at Vivo’s assembly unit at World Trade Centre (IT Park complex), situated at Greater Noida, were asked to resign.
As the security guards arrived to inform the fired employees, an altercation broke out, which soon turned into a clash, as angry employee grouped together, and went on a rampage, destroying machinery and office supplies.
As per reports, equipment worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed.
Some insiders have revealed that ever since IPL ended, Vivo has been terminating employees, and this recent clash can be seen as a cumulative result of the anger.
Employees Were Contractual?
Manmohan Sharma, who is an official at the World Trade Centre (IT Park complex), where Vivo assembly unit is set up, the terminated employees were contractual, hence the company didn’t issue any notice regarding the termination.
He said, “We are told by the VIVO?officials that the employees who created a ruckus are on contractual basis, so no notices were served to them prior to sacking. They attacked security guards and ransacked the building. The estimated loss to the building owing to the attack is of around Rs 10-12 lakh. We shall identify the attackers through CCTV and lodge FIR against them..”
Vivo has issued an official statement, saying that it was normal restructuring process. The statement said: “With continuous growth and strategic review, we look at staffing the right size in various divisions to improve productivity. The layoff is in line with this business decision. We have strictly adhered to the rules and regulations, and the contract, and are taking all the right measures to ensure a peaceful transition keeping their best interests in consideration.”
Deployment of police has been made in and around the premises, as the company may fire more employees in the coming days.
Gautam Budh Nagar’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Love Kumar, said, “The situation is under control. We have asked the workers not to indulge in any kind of violence and have also asked the company to mend their policies.”
