Twitter Launches Lite Version for Mobile Web; Partners with Vodafone for Live Updates on IPL

Switching to Lite versions is in, as all large tech companies launch a lighter version of their flagship product. Facebook launched Messenger Lite, Skype brought in Skype Lite, YouTube recently launched YouTube Go for India and LinkedIn introduced LinkedIn Lite, however this list is endless.

To make Twitter experience less annoying on slower internet speeds and slower smartphones, the social media company has announced Twitter Lite. It has been developed keeping in mind low data usage, quick loading on slower connections, resilience on unreliable mobile networks, and low space consumption at less than 1MB.

“Twitter Lite provides the key features of Twitter—your timeline, Tweets, Direct Messages, trends, profiles, media uploads, notifications, and more. With Twitter Lite, we are making Twitter more accessible to millions of people—all you need is a smartphone or tablet with a browser,” says the company.

To make matters even more interesting, Twitter has added a data saver mode, which allows you to download only those images and videos that you want to see. The company also allows continuous seamless updates to the app.

Data saver mode can switched on by tapping to your profile picture and going to settings. Images will not appear to you fully, instead they will be blurred. You can tap of specific photos and videos you want to see and download them instantaneously.

Twitter Lite makes it easy for people with patchy connections to stay in touch with the people they are following. Now whether it is tweeting to a high profile celebrity or a politician, it can be done with minimal data usage, especially in developing nations.

Twitter Lite is available globally starting today, and you can even add it to your desktop, so that you can launch it whenever you want, like an app. It occupies less space, hogs less data on your smartphone and offers the same experience as the original app.

For India, Twitter has partnered with Vodafone to promote Twitter Lite to their customers as a way to get live sports updates on Indian Premier League matches, teams, and players as the cricket season kicks off.

With 30% faster load times and 70% less data consumption, Vodafone users will be hooked on to the mobile web version for latest updates using Vodafone SuperNet. Vodafone users will receive an SMS alert with a link to the special curated timeline on Twitter Lite where you can get live updates on the T20 cricket season.

India seems to have become a very important market for so many tech biggies now, and it’s great to see their enthusiasm catering to the people here. Everything that used to be customized for the developed countries is now getting more focus on developing nations, which is as good as it can get for us.
