TRAI’s MySpeed App collects internet speed experienced by various users for a specific period, and based on the data, TRAI comes up with a ranking every month.
For the month of January, TRAI has discovered that Jio’s average download speed has decreased by 50%, whereas Airtel’s has increased by 50% for the same period.
Overall, Airtel has been able to beat Jio, in regards to download speed of mobile Internet.
Jio’s Services Continue To Deteriorate
Up from 18.14 Mbps speed registered in the month of December by Jio, their average download speed has been reduced to 8.34 Mbps in the month of January. In this same period, Airtel experienced a massive jump in average speed, as it reached 8.42 Mbps, up from 4.68 Mbps it registered in December.
The same MySpeed App’s averages had found Jio’s internet speed to be slowest in India, for the month of September.
This should worry Jio, as the free offer is about to end next month, and their true litmus test will start once their customer is asked to pay for their services. With such 50% drop in Internet speed, it would be very difficult to convince a hardcore mobile Internet user to opt for their services.
On the other hand, Airtel is making remarkable progress when it comes to Internet speed on mobile. A Credit Suisse report this month found Airtel’s speed to be in the range of 12 Mbps in 30 Indian cities, while Jio, Idea and Vodafone were benchmarked in the range of 7-8 Mbps.
TRAI’s report also found that BSNL’s average mobile internet speed has dropped to 3.16 Mbps in January from 3.42 Mbps in December, whereas Vodafone and Idea recorded a marginal increase to 6.8 Mbps and 6.62 Mbps respectively, up from 6.7 Mbps and 5 Mbps last month.
TRAI Will Investigate BSNL’s Voice Calling App
Meanwhile, TRAI has said that they have started investigating BSNL’s voice calling app which used landline modem to provide free calling to their customers.
TRAI chairman R.S Sharma said, “Our team is working with BSNL…we have asked them for certain clarifications with a view to understand the entire architecture of the limited FMT service. And then we will take a view quickly,”
In their reply, BSNL chairman Anupam Shrivastava said, “Trai has asked for certain clarifications from us to which we are responding..”
Last month, all telecom operators (except Jio) had revolted against BSNL for relaunching their Fixed Mobile Telephony (FMT) service, which basically allows their users to use landline modem to make or receive calls on their mobile phones, for free.
In their complaint, COAI had said that this app should be stopped, because it takes away all profits from the telecom companies, besides violating licensing agreements.
