A few companies have renamed themselves, to also bring a lot of other business under one umbrella. For example, Snapchat rebranded to Snap and Letv renamed to LeEco, because as the technology grows, the business grows in multiple directions as well, usually a lot more than the initially planned name of the company.

Now, Tesla Motors, Inc, an electric car manufacturer led by Elon Musk, has renamed itself to Tesla, Inc. The official filing by the company read, “Effective February 1, 2017, Tesla Motors, Inc. amended each of its certificate of incorporation and its bylaws solely to reflect a change of its corporate name to “Tesla, Inc.”

The reason behind the shortening of name is that Elon Musk wants to make the Tesla brand much more than just an electric car maker. The company has plans to introduce Tesla as a manufacturer of diversified energy products.

In November last year, Elon Musk sealed a $2 billion deal to acquire SolarCity, and subsequently unveiled its long-lasting home batteries and solar roofs. The idea behind the merger was to introduce clean energy to the world, that is inexpensive and easily accessible.

The Tesla cars will also come installed with solar roofs, thereby integrating the two companies together. The company also changed its website url from teslamotors.com to just tesla.com, thereby subtly announcing a change in its vision.

As of now, the company sells three Tesla models – Model S, Model X and the cheapest of the lot, Model 3. Model 3 is expected to be launched in India, but there is a lot of time for that. Model S is the sedan electric car while Model X is an SUV.

The real picture that the company now wants users to focus on are the Tesla batteries that integrate with solar to harness the abundant power of the sun and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Tesla’s home battery makes the most of your solar power system by storing unused solar energy and providing freedom from the utility grid.

Even the roofs on the houses convert solar energy into electricity, so that you do not have to rely on external source of energy. The roofs charge by the day and can be used for household chores when needed.

Tesla is moving away from being just an automobile maker to a technology and design company, that focuses on renewable energy. It has plans to expand its business to other countries as well, however the focus seems to be only on the developed nations for now.
