Nokia 6 Android Smartphone

Nokia’s last attempt at Android phones, Nokia X, X+ and XL, was a fail and the company had to be bought by Microsoft. The phones were nothing special as compared to the ones from its competitors, and even Nokia enthusiasts were not amused.

Eventually, HMD Global and FIH struck a deal with Microsoft and purchased the mobile business. There was now a new hope for Android phones from Nokia and there have been numerous rumours about a Nokia smartphone running on Android doing the rounds.

At last, HMD has taken the wraps off the affordable, yet elegant smartphone from Nokia called Nokia 6 that will come with the latest version of Android. Instead of having a huge launch and creating a buzz around it, the company silently released the smartphone through a press release, detailing the specifications, price and availability.

Arto Nummela, CEO, HMD Global said: “The Nokia 6 is a result of listening to our consumers who desire a beautifully crafted handset with exceptional durability, entertainment and display features. We start today, with our premium, high quality Nokia 6; built to deliver a fantastic core user experience for Chinese consumers. We look forward to unveiling further products in the first half of this year.”

Considering the phone has been named ‘6’, there have been reports doing the rounds that Nokia will launch another 5-6 phones this year. Nokia 6 will be available in China only and the company doesn’t have plans to release it worldwide, but Nokia did say that they are planning to release other phones for other markets.

Bad news for Nokia fans in India, but India is a very important market for all smartphone manufacturers and there surely will be some launches this year for Indians. HMD Global has listed the phone on their website and will be available on JD.com quite soon, since the company hasn’t given a specific release date.

Nokia 6 Specifications:

  • 5.5-inch bright hybrid in-cell full HD display
  • Android Nougat 7.1 out-of-the-box
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor with X6 LTE modem
  • 4GB RAM coupled with 64GB internal storage
  • 16MP phase detection autofocus rear camera, 8MP front camera. Both the cameras come with f/2.0 aperture lenses
  • Dolby Atmos speakers and ‘dual amplifiers’ for powerful audio
  • Phone is built using 6000 series aluminium with the button embedded with fingerprint scanner.
  • Dual-sim capability with 3,000 mAh battery

The smartphone will be available exclusively in China for 1,699 CNY or Rs 16,750 on JD.com. The online marketplace boasts of a good 200 million user base and will be HMD’s partner for quite some time.

Does Nokia 6 justify its price?

The smartphone has some impressive specifications for a mid-range smartphone. The likes of Moto G, LeEco Le Max, Xiaomi Mi 5 and OnePlus 2 give excellent competition to the smartphone.

HMD has not yet announced the Android skin on the phone and how Nokia plans to make it unique. However, Nokia’s comeback this time seems promising, especially after looking at the specifications of the phone.

The phone does lack a stronger chipset, and Nokia should have gone for the 600 series atleast to give it a boost. Otherwise there is nothing the smartphone is short of, and has everything you need in a mid-range handset. The most important part still remains as to how the software complements the hardware on the phone.

On looks wise as well, the photo teased by the company makes it look good, especially with the 6000 series aluminium build. Nokia has always been good at styling and this doesn’t come as a surprise either.

Since the phone will not be launched in India, it doesn’t make sense for Indians to keep much hope about getting their hands on it. However, Nokia will launch similar smartphones in the first half of this year, some of which will make way to India as well.
