If you are running Windows 7 and above then you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free provided you are not running the Enterprise and RT edition of windows.

Windows 10 upgrade eligibility

However, please keep in mind that all version of Windows 10 don’t offer same features. Please check Windows 10 Editions page to compare different versions of Windows 10.

Note: Windows 10 free upgrade is available only for licensed and activated copies of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

Once Upgraded, Windows 10 Is Yours For Life

In case you are not sure if you want to switch to Windows 10 permanently or in near future, even in that case we would advise you to upgrade to Windows 10. This would record a ‘digital entitlement’ to Windows 10 on Microsoft’s activation server. So basically, what it does is to associate your specific hardware with a specific Windows 10 digital license valid for life.

After you upgrade, you get a 30-day period to roll back to your older version of Windows (all files and settings would remain intact). However, you can always install Windows 10 in future and receive all upgrades to the OS, without entering any license key as long as you don’t do major hardware changes in your computer.

In case you had to change the motherboard, hard disk, and some other core components of your computer then you would need to enter the licence key of your current Windows OS. In case of any issues with the activation process you can also contact Microsoft for assistance.

What Happens After 29 July?

If you fail to get your free upgrade to Windows 10 before 29 July, then you would have to pay to upgrade your Windows OS. Microsoft will charge you Rs. 7,999 for Windows 10 Home and Rs. 14,999 for Windows 10 Pro.

So it is better to upgrade once for digital entitlement to Windows 10 and then roll back to your current OS if you don’t want to shift to Windows 10 right now. This would give you the freedom to install Windows 10 anytime in future.
