If Gaana.com is one of your favourite music apps, you will be delighted to know that the music library of Gaana will now have over 10 million songs.

Gaana.com has partnered with The Orchard, which is an American film, music and video distribution company, to increase the albums in its database. The additions to the library will mostly be indie songs totaling over 7 million. Gaana.com had also acquired much smaller Indie music site Musicfellas.com last year.

The Orchard operates in over 25 global markets and already has a huge user base. On partnering with Gaana.com, CEO of The Orchard, Brad Navin said, “Bringing our quality catalogue to local listeners and extending our labels’ brands in the region is the perfect representation of what we’re about: using technology and relationships to bring music to engage consumers wherever they are in the world.”

Pawan Agarwal, Business Head, Gaana.com, said “Our focus is to create best music experiences for the users and we are focused on bringing the widest selection of Songs from India and International markets for our consumers. The Orchard is an important partnership for us, and we believe the consumers would love it.”

While music streaming business is a tough space to be in, Gaana App has been doing quite well and probably is the most used music streaming app in India.  However, they have been facing rough weather off late. Recently, a Pakistani hacker had hacked Gaana.com databaseand compromised over 12.5 million accounts. Fortunately, the hacker left those accounts untouched and no damage was caused.

Gaana.com currently boasts of more than 15 million app downloads and 12 million registered users. With their library now tripling, they should definitely see a bump in their user base.

Tough Competition All Around

However, competition is getting tougher now – Apple Music will soon be launched in India, and if rumours are believed it will cost less than Rs. 200 per month for unlimited streaming. And there are other smaller players as well. Couple of months back SareGama offered free music streaming to over 1.1 lakh songs online. Apps like Saavn and Hungama are also steadily gaining popularity amongst Indian users.

With Apple Music coming into fray, we are sure to witness interesting times in this space!
