Flush with venture capital and high on hopes of attracting hoards of online shoppers this festive season, all major ecommerce portals are offering medium to heavy discounts on almost all the products. Especially in focus are electronics and gift items, which are the most sought after products during festivals.

As per study by CounterPoint Research, ecommerce accounts for 10% of all mobile phones sold during festivals, and this season, this may increase to 15%. Insiders are telling that Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal will collectively spend Rs 200 crore for promoting and marketing their offers this Dussera-Diwali season for leveraging maximum attention from discount hungry consumers.

What are these ecommerce companies upto? Lets find out:

Yesterday’s leading newspapers carried Flipkart’s full page advertisement, announcing the Big Billion Day sale on October 6th. Although the exact specifics of the sale was not mentioned, but yes, it has created quite a stir among shoppers. Flipkart has described it as India’s “biggest sale day” ever as flash sales and hourly lucky draws will be held throughout the day.

There is an interesting story behind October 6th as their chosen date. 610 was the flat number from where the Bansals started their humble journey; and the Big Billion Day has been termed as they want a billion Indians to unite and shop from their portal. Around 10,000 people have been specially assigned to deliver the products as fast as possible, as the company is expecting an avalanche of orders.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who was recently in Bangalore did his best to promote his company by showcasing a check of $2 billion on top of a truck. Insiders are claiming that Amazon has been planning for this festive season since last 6 months. And the results are paying off. After intense advertisement and promotion of it’s discounts since last one week, Amazon India has witnessed an increase of 250 % in average orders in a day.
