Chinese Smartphone manufacturers are aggressively gaining foothold in India – Xiaomi’s Flagship Mi 3 has been a run-away success. IDC’s recent smartphone quarterly growth numbers show that demand for sub-$200 smartphones is very high in India. Companies like Xiaomi, Gionee, Micromax, Karbonn, Lava, Intex and many others are all fighting to increase their market share and are challenging Samsung’s top position.

Gionee launched in India over a year back, and their first couple of Smartphone models like S 5.5 and E 7 have been quite a success. They have now announced launch of 5.5-inch Smartphone (or Phablet) that should appeal to Indians who are looking at larger screen phones.

If you are not aware, Gionee sells over 23 million handsets per year worldwide and ranks No.10 in the world by smartphone market share.

GPad G5

Called Gionee GPad G5, the smartphone is powered by a fast HexaCore 1.5 GHz processor. The phone comes with 5.5 inch HD IPS display and runs on latest 4.4 Kitkat Android OS version. Priced at Rs. 14,999, the Gionee GPad G5 seems to be targeted at users who want large screen and good performance without making a hole in their pocket.

Mr Arvind Vohra, India Head, Gionee Smartphones said,”I am delighted to present our consumers with our latest product, the Gionee GPAD G5. Our basic thought behind introducing this product was to give our consumers a superior product that can be handled with ease. There is a huge demand for premium features at affordable prices. Keeping consumer preferences in mind we have introduced the device which is high on features and easy on the pocket and we are excited to get it to the market.”

Our Take

Based on the specifications, we can say that phone is quite good and competitively priced. However, Xiaomi’s has now set the benchmarks high. If you compare MI3 specifications and it’s price, the GPad G5 price looks on the higher side. However, unlike Mi 3, G5’s will not be difficult to buy. Gionee phones are available at many offline shops, and hence it will attract users who cannot (or don’t prefer) to buy their phones on the internet.

What do you think ? Will GPad G5 be popular in India?
