[This is strictly an opinion piece, I am not a logo or design expert, but wanted to vent out my extreme disappointment of the logo]
Yahoo’s “30 day of change” has come to an end and the new Yahoo logo has been unveiled, and what a anti-climax it is.
In fact, after looking the new logo, I would anytime prefer the old one. To be honest, the new Yahoo logo is an extreme disappointment. Like I said, I am not an expert, but I do keep abreast with latest design and UX trends.
In my opinion, the new logo could not have been worst. The bevel and emboss style on the lettering is a strict no-no for me. I like the purple, however, the typography and the styling of typography is absolutely ancient in my book.
If you have not already seen the new Yahoo logo, here it is.
I have hailed Marissa Mayer earlier for how she is slowly bringing Yahoo! back to its former glory, but in this case I’d have to say “What was she thinking?”
Marissa has given a detailed account on how she along with her team came up with logo over the weekend. And while most of the reasons she stated are good, I still do not understand how the logo ended up looking something like this. It has that distinct age-old “bevel and emboss” look that hurts my eyes. And even the typography could have been a little more un-traditional.
I think the biggest reason for my disappointment is that logo does not come across as modern and sleek, something that Yahoo! as a company needs to come across by removing it’s traditional robe. I feel the new logo makes Yahoo! look even more confortable in that robe.
Yahoo has also released a video introducing the new logo – This too does not talk much other than showing certain aspects of how they came up with this design.
I am hoping that over next few years I may start liking it, but as of now I am going to try and avoid it as much as possible!
What do you think?
