Mobile subscriber growth now seems to be coming from Rural India. In the month of June 2013, India added a total of 3.16 million new subscribers taking the total tally of mobile subscribers in India to 873.36 million. This is very visible from the fact that villages and towns added 2.91 mln new connections as compared to only 0.26 mln in Metros and cities.

According to TRAI’s latest report, India now has a total telecom subscriber base of 903.09 million that includes landline connections as well.

Here is the chart that shows subscriber additions since January 2012.

June 13 Indian mobile subscriber base

It is interesting to note than mobile subscriber numbers were at peak in June last year when India had nearly 925 mln subscribers. But most of those subscribers were basically inactive. Last year TRAI decided that it will remove all inactive numbers from the system after 3 months of non-usage. Due, to that decision many long time inactive numbers went out of the system and hence we have had months when mobile subscribers showed negative growth.

However, due to this move the active subscriber percentage rose drastically. In last one year, the percentage of active subscribers has grown from 74.5 percent in June 2012 to 83.75 percent in June 2013.
