India is now has the 3rd largest Online population in the world thanks to 31 percent year-on-year growth according to ComScore. The report states that India now has 73.9 million internet users who have surfed the web either from from home or their work computer. This number expands to 145 million users if we consider extended online universe.
The report – India Digital Future in Focus 2013 – examines latest trends in web usage, online video, mobile & search, social media usage and e-commerce growth that is shaping the Indian digital marketplace.

India’s Growth of 31 percent is the second highest in the world, next only to Brazil whose internet population grew by 37 percent.
The report also finds that three-quarters of all online population in India comprises of population under 35 years and users between age group of 35-44 are amongst the heaviest users, though this usage is dominated by male audience. India has lower female internet usage of 39 percent as compared to worldwide average of 47 percent.
Among it’s Asian peers, India had the fastest growing internet population and now comprises of 11.5 percent share in Asia. China’s share in Asia fell from 55.2 percent to 54 percent this year.
Indian Online User Behaviour
The report points that time spent Social Networking platforms is the highest among all other categories with 25 percent of all user time spent on it. On a global scale Social media sites account for 20 percent of users time.
Email, Instant messaging and related services also take up about 23 percent of user’s time as compared to 16 percent globally.
Among the web categories, blogs showed phenomenal growth with nearly 11.6 million additional new users looking at blogs compared to last year. While looking for apparels online registered highest growth of 85 percent. Comparison shopping was another category which registered 52 percent growth.
Among the most visited web properties in India Google was most popular with 69.4 million unique visitors followed by Facebook which had 59.7 mln Indian users. Yahoo (38.9 mln), Microsoft (31.3 mln) and Wikipedia (24.9 mln) were the top 5 websites visited by Indians.
Among Indian sites, Times internet properties attracted 24 mln unique visitors and stood at 6th position.

- On an average, 217 minutes are spent on Facebook every month by Indian users
- Women aged 35-44 are the heaviest internet users among all age/gender groups
- 25% of PC screen time is spent on social, 86% Indian web users visit a social networking site
- 54 million Indians watched online videos on their PC’s; 27% increase over a year
- Non-PC traffic in India zooms ahead, grows from 10.9% to 14.2% in 2013
