TomTom, one of the leading global navigation solutions company has launched mobile navigation app on Android playstore for users in Indian subcontinent. The TomTom android app is priced at USD 36.99 (Rs. 2370).

TomTom has been primarily selling their navigation devices embedded with its proprietary software, however, with the influx of smartphones and tablets, and users increasingly using Google Maps and Navigation (which is available for free), they have been forced to decouple their technology and make it available for smartphones and tablets.

TomTom’s navigation app may come across as an expensive one, but for a person who is on road constantly, it definitely makes sense. The most important aspect of TomTom app is that it comes with detailed local maps which are available to user even if they are not connected to the internet.

Unlike Google Maps, TomTom app can be used even when offline, and they do no incurr any data charges, which might bring in hefty data charges. TomTom also promises lifetime support and regular updates on their maps, which are locally stored on the mobile device itself.

The app comes embedded with IQ routes, which essentially gives travellers the shortest and the fastest route available to their destination. The app has various standard and advanced features including landmark navigation, multi-tasking support, voice guided navigation and 2D/3D driving view.

TomTom maps have 100 percent coverage in India spanning across 7200 cities and towns. For travelers in India, TomTom also offers spoken voice instructions in most of the Indian languages including Indian English, Punjabi, Gujarati, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, Oriya, Marathi, Bengali.

While TomTom navigation may not appeal to people who do not travel much (as they can use Free Google navigation), this app will surely find buyers who are frequently on the road. TomTom app is not only superior but will save more money on data charges than its price for frequent travelers.

Kumaran – I just converted the USD price with current exchange rate and hence arrived at that price. The Google play store still shows me in dollars and not in rupees.
