Samsung Electronics sells over 1 crore galaxy devices in India

Samsung Electronics Vice President Asim Warsi announced that the electronics major had sold over 1 crore units of its galaxy devices in India. “Innovative devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and SIII, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Y have caught the imagination of customers and helped us democratize the smartphone experience in the Indian market” he said. Samsung recently emerged with top market share in worldwide shipments of smart-connected devices according to IDC.

Infosys’ energy conservation recognized by government, Q3 results on 11 January 2013

Infosys was awarded the National Energy Conservation Award 2012 for its efforts in conversation of energy in its Jaipur and Pune campuses.

“Energy efficiency and conservation are key contributors to our goal of becoming carbon neutral in India by the end of 2017. We are constantly driving new innovations and technologies to achieve this goal and have reduced our energy consumption by 50 percent in all new buildings, compared to standard buildings” said Ramdasa Kamath, Sr VP, Administration, Infrastructure & Security, Infosys. India’s second largest IT services company also announced that it will be announcing Q3 results on 11 January.

Getit partners with Yahoo

Marketing company Getit has partnered with Yahoo to give the internet company access to its listing of over 30 lakh local business listings. Searches performed on Yahoo Local will reportedly land on a co-branded section powered by Getit.

“This is a very significant partnership as it brings the power of Getit’s databases to Yahoo users and likewise, brings the immense distribution of Yahoo to Getit’s advertisers and SMEs” said Siddharth Gupta, CEO, Getit.

Netflix users in Americas suffer from system outage on Christmas

On-demand internet video streaming service Netflix suffered an outage on Christmas eve. Many users across the Americas were left facing disrupted services after which the company tweeted “We’re sorry for the Christmas Eve outage. Terrible timing! Engineers are working on it now” Netflix reportedly blamed AWS servers for the outage.

Over 50 lakh domain names added to the internet in Q3 2012: VeriSign

“More than five million domain names were added to the Internet in the third quarter of 2012, bringing the total number of registered domain names as of Sept. 30, 2012, to more than 246 million worldwide across all Top-Level Domains” said VeriSign in a press release.

Q3 2012 numbers signaled a seventh straight increase of over 2% in the number of domain names globally.

TCS leases largest office space in Mumbai

Tata Consultancy Services leased a 3.5 lakh sq feet office space in Neptune Element, an 11 storey building in Thane’s Wagle Industrial Estate. The annual rent for the space is reportedly close to Rs. 16 crore and the facility is expected to house over 3,000 employees.

HCL Infosystems partners with ESi Acquisitions Inc for Crisis Information Management Software (CIMS)

HCL Infosystems announced entering into partnership with US based ESi Acquisitions Inc to deliver Crisis Information Management Software (CIMS) services in India. The strategic tie-up is expected to inject growth in the crisis management solution market in India.

“We are delighted to partner with ESi. The partnership will further strengthen our portfolio and enable us to provide a world class and state of the art solution to our customers” said Neeraj Jaitley, President of Enterprise Solutions, HCL Infosystems Ltd.

Pearson to buy 5% stake in Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Media for $89.5 million

Pearson, a leading global publishing and education company, picked up a 5% stake in Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Media for $89.5 million. Barnes & Noble will now own 78.2% of NOOK Media while Microsoft and Pearson own 16.8% and 5% of the e-reader unit.

“Pearson is a forward thinking company similarly focused on reading and learning, with powerful assets and a terrific management team. We welcome their partnership in NOOK Media,” said William Lynch, CEO, Barnes & Noble, in a press release.

Samsung Galaxy Music Duo launched in India at Rs. 9,199

Samsung launched its dual-sim Samsung Galaxy Music Dua in India for Rs. 9,199. The smartphone runs on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS and features the company’s TouchWiz user interface. The Galaxy Music Duo has a 3 inch display, 3 MP rear camera, 4 GB in-built storage, 512 MB RAM and dual front speakers.

Apple CEO Tim Cook’s salary package drops 99%

Apple CEO Tim Cook took a 99% cut in his package after his annual compensation fell $373.83 million to $4.17 million in 2012 as compared to $378 million in 2011. His package in 2012 reportedly includes a base salary of $1.4 million and a non-equity bonus of $2.8 million.

Even though my below comment is not relavent to the topic of 10 most tech news of 2012, I was curious about the figures in the item TCS leases office property. 3.5 lakh square feet on anual rent of 16 crores work out to 38 rupees per sft per month. I think this figure is too low. I dont know if 38 rupees is going rate. Any Mumbai realters reading this?? :)
