National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India became the world’s largest bourse in terms of the number of trades in equity shares in September 2012, according to World Federation of Exchanges’ (WFE) latest data.
The number of equity trades on NSE increased 10.7% from 10.52 crore in August 2012 to 11.64 crore in September 2012, 20.7% higher than the 9.65 crore trades on NYSE Euronext, the world’s largest stock exchange according to market capitalization. At 11.18 crore, South Korean market Korea Exchange had the second highest number of equity trades followed by NYSE Euronext.

According to NSE’s website, its network connects to over 1,500 locations across the country and supports more than 2.3 lakh terminals.
The exchange is promoted by India’s leading banks and financial institutions including ICICI Bank Ltd, State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, Bank of Baroda, Infrastructure Development Finance Company Ltd and United India Insurance Company Limited among others.
US’ NASDAQ OMX (8.72 crore), China’s Shenzhen SE (7.36 crore), China’s Shanghai SE (6.9 crore), India’s BSE (2.77 crore), Japan’s Tokyo SE Group (2.49 crore), Canada’s TMX Group (1.91 crore) and UK’s London SE Group (1.82 crore) were the other bourses in the top 10.
Worldwide, NSE maintains top spot in the number of equity trades logged in 2012 up to 30 September 2012 with 106.68 crore trades followed by 105.87 crore on NYSE Euronext and 100.18 crore on NASDAQ OMX.
In the Asia-Pacific region, NSE remains to be the stock exchange with the highest number of equity trades in each month of 2012. In total, the 106.68 crore equity trades made on India’s largest stock exchange during the 9 months of 2012 was followed by 94.48 crore on Korea Exchange and 73.18 crore on China’s Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) became the world’s 7th largest bourse in terms of the number of equity trades made in September 2012. The Dalal Street based exchange logged 2.77 crore equity trades, 2.9% higher than 2.69 crore in August 2012.
NYSE Euronext, NASDAQ OMX and London SE are the top 3 bourses in the world in terms of market capitalization at the end of September 2012 according to the data from WFE. BSE remains the 11th largest stock exchange while NSE is 12th.
