UIDAI launches Aadhaar Official Channel on YouTube

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched the Aadhaar Official Channel on YouTube to make people aware of UID’s features and its enrolment process. "We have added yet another medium to our existing modes of communication with the residents. The Aadhaar Official Channel has very informative videos that educate residents of what the Aadhaar number is, how to get enrolled and benefits of getting an Aadhaar number" said Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, UIDAI.

Barnes & Noble launches Nook HD

Barnes & Noble unveiled Nook HD, its brand new tablet in 7 and 9 inch variants. Competing with Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD has been competitively priced in US markets at $199.

The 7 inch tablet is powered by a 1.3 GHz processor, has 1 GB RAM and is the lightest tablet in its class. Both 7 and 9 inch models are based on Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS and will have 8 GB and 32 GB models.

BSNL & Wish Tel set to launch IRA ICON

BSNL, in partnership with Wish Tel is set to launch IRA ICON tablet PC.

"The tablet PC has been designed to suit the needs of avid tech – savvy youngsters, business environments, multi-tasking homemakers and the student fraternity alike. The BSNL Value added services like Video streaming, Mobile TV and various other applications under BSNL LIVE shall be extended to our valued customers in an increased screen at a very affordable price" said R K Upadhyay, BSNL in a Wish Tel statement. IRA ICON has a 7 inch display, 3G connectivity and is powered by a 1.2 GHz processor based on Android 4.0. The tablet has 1 GB RAM and 4 GB internal memory, expandable up to 32 GB via microSD.

IRA ICON is expected to be priced at Rs. 10,500, reported ET.

HP launches HP Institute to train 65,000 graduates in India

HP launched HP Institute and announced plans to train 65,000 graduates over the next 5 years. Students will have access to four HP Accredited Technical Associate certifications aimed to arm graduates with business-ready IT skills.

"HP will work with Indian universities to bring practical experience and job-ready skills into an academic setting, packaged in a way to help India develop the abilities of its graduate workforce" mentioned an official announcement.

Sony launches Xperia tipo in India for Rs. 9,999

Sony launched Android 4.0 based smartphone Sony Xperia tipo in India. The phone has a 3.2 inch TFT touchscreen, 3.2 MP camera, 512 MB RAM, 2.2 GB user accessible internal memory expandable to 32 GB and is powered by an 800 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The entry level smartphone has been priced at Rs. 9,999, reported Business Today.

Facebook launches Facebook Gifts

Facebook has launched a service which allows members to send real gifts to other users on the social network. Once a gift is chosen, the recipient will be notified and will need to enter his/her address and shipping details. Users will be able to choose from a variety of gifting options including gift cards, chocolates, cupcakes and stuffed animals.

With Facebook Gifts, users can also share their gifting by posting it on their Timelines.

Tim Cook apologizes for iOS 6 Maps

In a rare move, Tim Cook, CEO, Apple, gave a public apology for the errors with the Maps app in iOS 6. "We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better", he said, reported ET. Till the time Apple gets around to fixing the known issues, Tim Cook suggested that users try alternatives including Bing, MapQuest, Nokia or Google Maps with voice navigation.

Sam Pitroda holds first ever virtual press conference on Twitter

Sam Pitroda, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations, held the first ever virtual press conference on Twitter on 25 September 2012. In the press conference titled Democratization of Information, he answered questions from other Twitter users. "I firmly believe that information is the fourth pillar of democracy along with legislature, executive and judiciary", he tweeted.

Amazon to give business loans to online sellers

In a new program called Amazon Lending, the world’s largest e-tailer has begun offering loans to online sellers. According to an email received by a merchant, the loans will carry an interest rate of 13% and amounts of up to $800,000 would be lent, reported Reuters.

The money will be transferred to a seller’s bank account within five business days after approval and repayments will be deducted from a merchant’s seller account on Commentators are looking at this move as an attempt by Amazon to encourage online sellers and small online businesses.
