Indian Digital Media Awards 2012’s Person of the Year – Who’ll it be?


Who will succeed MakeMyTrip’s Deep Kalra?

OK, now that I have your attention, this isn’t about Kalra moving on from the super-successful company he founded. No, this is about the next super achiever in the Digital domain with whom Kalra will share the most premium real estate — in industry perception, and as adjudged by a top notch jury — as the Indian Digital Media Awards 2012’s Person of the Year.


The third edition of the Indian Digital Media Awards will unfold with the IDMA 2012 tonight [April 16th 2012], and with Media, Marketing and Advertising professionals attending, the best work in the Digital domain will be recognized across seven key areas and 55 comprehensive categories, with 99 awards for creatives and initiatives from a total of 523 entries judged by a stellar jury of 22.

The awards will salute the best work across Web, Mobile, Social Media, Search Promotions, Languages and Special Awards with the Hall of Fame awards culminating the evening. These Hall of Fame awards include Digital & Social Media Advertiser of the Year, Digital and Social Media Agency of the Year, Digital Start Up of the Year and the IDMA Person of the Year.

Hero MotoCorp, Tata Docomo and MTV are in the final reckoning for Digital & Social Media advertiser of the year, as are three Social Media agencies for Social Media Agency of the year. And as to the question I put in that teaser headline, well, the organizers aren’t sharing the shortlist yet, so it’ll only be tonight at the Blue Frog in Mumbai where the nominees and winner will be announced. And incidentally, this year, a part of the entry fees will be donated for a social cause.

The 523 entries in 55 categories were judged by an independent panel of 22 media, marketing, advertising and digital professionals.

Oh, and Annurag Batra, CEO of e4m, the group that’s put this together, tells me, “The e4m Group is a mere custodian of the IDMA 2012. Our group team was neither a part of the jury, nor did it influence the decision making of the Jury in any manner and at any time in the entire process.”

Some of the major winners of IDMA from 2011 were Deep Kalra, Chairman and CEO, MakeMyTrip (IDMA Person of the Year); Interface Business Solutions (Digital and Social Media Agency of the Year) and Tata Docomo (Digital and Social Media Advertiser of the Year Award). This year, they’ve added Digital Startup of the Year too, and many new categories. And for the record, only those entries have been accepted that were used / deployed between 0001 hours January 1, 2011 and 1159 hours of December 31, 2011.

And considering both, the KPMG-FICCI report for Media & Entertainment in 2012 and the IMAI report have acknowledged the phenomenal growth and significance of the Digital and Social Media domains, awards like the IDMA 2012 become increasing relevant to both, the professional practitioner and the serious student of the digital domain.

After all, the 99 winners at IDMA 2012 will provide a thought-provoking showcase of some of the best work in the space over the past year.
