Live tracking of trains introduced by Indian Railways!

As promised during the Railway Budget, the railways is getting technologically advance. Indian Railways has launched beta of their website trainenquiry.com, which allows travellers to know the status of current & future trains. The new TrainEnquiry.com site has been developed by Indian Railway’s National Train Enquiry System (NTES) and promises to the needs of modern-day Indian Railways passengers and their expectations of online user experience.

What really stands apart in this new redesign is that it has really adopted modern technologies and is very user friendly unlike any other Government website. Not only that, the site (atleast currently) is lightning fast in its search.

trainenquiry

User does not need to know the train number or any other details – He/She has to just type the station name and it will instantly throw up the trains currently running or the ones which are scheduled to run. If users clicks on the train currently in transit, the portal will show a visual giving information about where exactly that train is currently and whether it is on time or late. The visual also shows how many kilometers have been past since last station, and how many more kilometers to go for next station.

trainenquiry - current status

My Take: I was really impressed with the few searches that I made. It was fast & accurate. The site uses modern technologies like AJAX, which allows users to see information without any page loads. The site also is very focused in the sense that it does not carry any advertisements or unwanted information unlike most other Government or Railways sites.

Overall, the new trainenquiry.com site left me very impressed – The new site will be live in a few weeks, however, if you want to give it a try head over to http://trainenquiry.com/searchtrain.aspx and choose the new look.

Let us know what you feel about it!
