If you had any doubt about the signification shift that Mobile devices are bringing in how we conduct our online lives – Hear from someone who is qualified the most – Google themselves.
According to the stats revealed by Google Indian Head, Rajan Anandan, during Confluence 2011, a 3 day seminar organized by prestigious IIM-A, 67 percent of e-commerce happens on mobile devices and as many as 40 % of all Google searches in India are done using mobile phones!
Putting it simply, it means that 2 out of every 3 ecommerce queries (or transactions) happen through a mobile device and every 2 out of 5 search queries are registered through a mobile phones!
Even though these statistics have come from Google themselves, I am extremely apprehensive about it. If you compare the same statistics with other countries who have far higher penetration of Smart-phones, it is even more un-believable. Sample this – Only 14% searches in US happen through Mobile phones (as against 40% in India). It is even lower for countries like UK (6%) and Russia (11%).
The other number – 67% of Ecommerce through mobile – is little confusing as well. Are these ecommerce related queries, which is a possibility. However, if it means the percentage of transactions, then it looks impossible (atleast that’s what I think).
Rajan Anandan talks about many such stats and numbers during his Confluence 2011 presentation – Luckily I was able to find his entire speech on Youtube. Following is his 36 minute speech – If you have time, you must see it.

Even though some of the numbers which he quotes in this presentation are quite surprising, it surely gives an idea of where India is moving in terms of mobile internet penetration. Let us know what you think!
