The lower rate of Mobile subscriber addition continues with addition of mere 7.34 million mobile subscribers in August according to the latest report released by TRAI. I say “mere” relatively as India has been nearly adding, nearly double of that, month on month and sometimes going beyond 20 million subscriber additions in a month alone!
We have been covering the TRAI mobile subscriber additions report for last 4 years and last 2-3 months have witnessed least amount of additions.
However there is an interesting fact, although the number additions is low, the percentage of active mobile user count seems to be rising steadily. Out of 866 mln total subscribers, 609 mln (70.4%) are active subscribers. This percentage was around mid 60% just a few months back!

Mobile Number Portability in August 2011
Increasingly more and more mobile subscribers are opting for Mobile Number Portability – This is in part thanks to the guidelines and directives that TRAI had come out with couple of months back. The had pointed out to operators that Subscriber MNP cannot be stopped on flimsy grounds.
In August 2011, 25.12 lakh requests we made for MNP taking the total MNP requests since the start to 180.59 lakh!
Statistically speaking, about 2.1 % of all Indian mobile subscribers have opted for Mobile Number Portability till date.
Operator wise Monthly Mobile Subscriber Addition
It looks like Idea seems to have benefitted quite a bit with MNP and additions – It added close to 1/3rd or about 2.33 million of all the mobile subscribers added in August 2011.
The biggest and the most surprising factor over last 3 month has been fall of Tata. They seemed to have lost a lot of subscribers. In May 11, Tata managed a 2.93% additions, in June 11, just 1.91%, in July they actually lost huge chunk of subscribers and this month again the addition is only 3.27%.
With Idea’s stellar performance, Idea is steadily increasing its lead – Bharti (19.85%) remains a clear leader with close to 3% differentiating the second placed Reliance (16.87%). Vodafone (16.65%) is just marginally behind Reliance.
Broadband Subscriber Growth in August 2011
Broadband growth remains slow and steady with just 1.9 Lakh new subscribers getting added in August. The total Broadband subscribers in India now stands at 12.69 Million!
