TRAI to announce regulations on Spammy commercial calls

6

I am sure literally every Mobile subscriber in India has received spammy and unsolicited  calls. Not even Indian Finance Minister has been spared. The issue of Spam calls actually came into limelight when Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee received a call from a telemarketer when he was in an important meeting with the Opposition parties…Imagine that!

We may finally see an end of this very soon. Here is a statement made by TRAI Chairman Mr. H.S Sharma:

“We have finished the entire process of consultations. We are in the process of finalising the regulation for unsolicited calls and messaging. We wanted to do it by the end of October but there is slight delay. We may be out with regulation before 15 November,"

Although, no details are available on TRAI website, the Chairman has promised that it would "solve" the UCC (Unsolicited commercial calls) problem for good.

Personally, I find these calls most irritating, more than even the frequent Spam SMS’es that get – Purely because they are highly intrusive. Atleast for an SMS you can gauge whether it is a Spam or not from looking at the sender’s headers. But, these spammy calls come from proper mobile number and you never know until you pick up and talk to them.

And sometimes, these tele-marketers are so imposing that you do not have any option but to disconnect the call, only to find that they call you again – It is not only irritating, but highly frustrating as well!

it wont be implemented so fast. i remember the number of attempts made to cross the deadline date for number portability system.the first deadline was in december 2009,according to trai it should been implemented, but u know its India you need to expect delays….

I just hope that breather comes soon as these calls keep increasing & even if i apply for do not call service it takes 45 days for activation (hell).

    1. Arun Prabhudesai says

      Charu,

There is no use of Do Not call registry. I have registered 3 times in last 2 years…it DOES not work !

      1. Sagar Bedmutha says

That’s the issue. It is not that NDNC is not good. It has already been introduced after much thought process.
What we need is not a new regulation, but a stricter & smoother implementation of the laws.

  3. Sagar Bedmutha says

Can’t say whether it will be implemented by 15/09. MNP has been doing rounds on rounds. And as there are obvious vested interest by telcos, it is unlikely to happen on 15/09 of in immediate future.

    1. Arun Prabhudesai says

Sagar…agreed…But I guess it is not as difficult to implement this as MNP is.

Having said that, I take all government announcement with a pinch of salt. so you may be right, we will not know until 15th is passed :)
