Infosys becomes 1st Indian Company to officially introduce Social Media Policy!

12

Infosys has announced that they will soon come out with a code of conduct for their employees who participate on various Social Media sites like Facebook & twitter. This is absolutely a step in right direction.

Many Indian companies have taken a different route by banning the social media sites completely on their network, which according to me is a completely wrong decision – especially in this day and age when Social Media sites are gaining much significance.

According to Infosys representatives, they will be coming out with a Do’s and Dont’s sort of manual for all Infosys employees. In a scenario, if the employee breaches the code of conduct, he may even loose his job.

I think the biggest concern that Infosys has currently is the privacy of confidential client data, which could very easily be compromised knowingly or un-knowingly – The code of conduct will ensure that employee is responsible for his actions during his interactions on Social Media sites.

Internationally, most of the big companies like Microsoft & Intel have a Social Media Policy, but in India Infosys will be the first company to come out with it officially.

What really needs to be seen though is  – Whether enforcing such a policy will actually serve its intended purpose. I doubt…

How will Infosys monitor all it’s Employees interactions? and even if they are able to monitor it on their own network, an employee can easily interact on social media sites using his mobile phone. Anyone can write a blog and publish it anonymously!

So the effectiveness of this policy is debate-able, however, this is a step in right direction – instead of banning social media completely in offices !

Stop the blocking! More and more IT departments are choosing to block social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. It sounds like yours is one of them. What they usually don’t know is that there’s new technology that allows them to just block specific dangerous features of those apps without shutting down your access entirely. Palo Alto Networks has put together a great whitepaper called “To Block  or Not. Is That the Question?” that will help your IT folks set up “smart policies” so that you can get your productivity and your life back without endangering your company’s network. If the Management fails to understand the employees concern for the organisation, then the employees are likely to come open on social networking site to attract the attention of the management and media. Its employee’s democratic citizens right of freedom of expression. Its up to the management to address those delicate issues at the initial levels by forming a core committee to handle such issues internall. If not addressed on time than the frustration level among employees will increase and it will harm the organisation and that is why there is a high attrition rate in infosys, as most sincere, knowledgeable, loyal and hardworking employees are saying ADIOS. This is not only in Software companies, but also in Banks like Axis Bank, and it happens when HRMS policy fails to push the right talent at right position.

People should use social media responsibly while being employed in an organisation.

Infosys does not allow employees to access any social networking website from within its network. Even gmail or yahoo access is not allowed in office. Other than that, camera phones and smart phones are not allowed in centers where financial data is being worked upon. This policy is merely to scare the employees from putting bad things about work environment on blogs and comments like this one.

That;s true that a company won’t be able to monitor employees action outside work environment. But putting codes inside the work campus is a good start which really can create awareness and shed light on the consequences to the employees. It is like you telling a kid not to touch the fire after sharing the effects of it. If the kid does touch it anyways, it is going to get hurt. If the employee is smart enough, they will act smart. That’s the intention and should reap rewards.

They started to block “last day ” “quitting infy mails” in public forum in the infy network , so they went to social networks and blogs. By placing too many restrictions they are just doing much more damage.
Instead of blocking communication and forums to vent frustration , they can concentrate on listening genuine ones and clarify them .
If you dont listen to your child’s issues and problem and work on it, they are going to complain to every classmate or teacher or anyone he or she comes in contact with. Beating them up or making them shut their mouth everytime they open their mouth is going to attack and affect their morale and going to just work against you.Already you had moved away from employee-friendly , non-hierarchial organisation to most-hated, indian-government like organisation and left “quitting” as the only option. HR dept had become against employees and started to work like mouthpiece for middle management’s dictatorship.
Work on your HEAR and other forums and make it efficient .
You are running a service company unless your employees are happy your clients are not going to be and if no clients – NOTHING.

For sure it is an step in right direction. Instead of banning it, they can have a policy for their employees.

I think Infy is banning all social networking sites. We met their HR Heads a couple months back. I would be interested in knowing if this has changed and they are allowed to access facebook/twitter/linked in at work!
