20.31 Million new Telecom Subscribers added in March – Vodafone bags maximum share !
Telecom subscriber Juggernaut seems to going on and on and on…March was another bumper month based on the figures released yesterday by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). March added around 20.31 million new wireless subscribers taking the overall teledensity of country to 52.74.
One of the reasons why we are seeing such un-reasonable 3G auction bids is the same – With such huge volume to cater to, Telecom companies do not really mind shelling out thousands of crores to gain extra edge over their competitors. Additionally, Mobile number Portability is going to play a huge role in coming months and years – and Telcos that provide better and bigger services are the ones that will survive, while the smaller telecom companies will consolidate.
Coming back to the report released by TRAI – Here are the Highlights of the report:
- Total Telephone subscriber base reaches 621.28 Million
- Wireless subscription reaches 584.32 Million
- Wireline subscription remains at 36.96 Million
- 20.31 Million new additions in wireless
- Overall Tele-density reaches 52.74
- Broadband subscription is 8.75 million
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 621.28 Million at the end of March-2010 from 600.98 Million in February-2010, thereby registering a growth rate of 3.38%. With this, the overall Tele-density in India reaches 52.74%.
Vodafone rakes in maximum subscribers in March 2010
Vodafone added 17.87% of all the new subscriber additions that happened in March. Tata had taken the lead for past few months thanks to their innovative marketing campaigns. However, Vodafone seems to have done quite well on back of the Zoozoo ads that have been running through out the IPL campaign. Reliance Communications added 14.82%, while Bharti garnered 14.77% subscribers. Tata did not do too well relatively adding 13.72% subscribers in month of march.
Bharti remains distant first in overall market share in India
Bharti maintains it position as a market leader with 21.84% market share, while there is tough fight for 2nd position between Reliance (17.53%) and Vodafone (17.26%).
Broadband connection continue sluggish growth
Every month, I keenly watch this figure – the growth in Broadband subscriber numbers – but I am disappointed every time. While we have close to 620 million Mobile subscribers, we have only 8.75 million broadband connections by end of March – An increase of dismal 1.90% over previous month.
