Top 10 Wealthiest Cities in India

by Arun Prabhudesai on August 19, 2009 |

{Update: The following rankings are based on consensus done in 2001, and have been correctly pointed out to us by one of our readers D7Y. We will be judicious to provide readers with latest data going forward.}

Any Guesses?

I hear most of you saying it is undoubtedly the financial Capital of India – Mumbai.

But you are wrong, that is not the right answer. I was also quite surprised when I read it, but immediately sense prevailed

Chandigarh is actually the wealthiest City in India

(source)

WealthiestCitiesinIndia Top 10 Wealthiest Cities in India

Dont be surprised, that is actually true. Although Mumbai has the largest quantum of money, it is also the most populace city with majority of them living below poverty line. Mumbai may probably have as many beggars compared to rest of India put together (this is just a guess I am making without any factual backing up of information)

Wealth of a city can actually be calculated based on wealth per capita (total wealth divided by total number of people). A more standard term for comparing wealth between countries is PPP (Purchasing Power Parity)

So from that perspective, Chandigarh seems to more average wealth per person than any other city.

I hope that puts to rest the question of why Mumbai is NOT the wealthiest cities.

Here are the Top 10 Wealthiest Cities in India

  1. Chandigarh
  2. Panaji
  3. Delhi
  4. Valparai
  5. Greater Mumbai
  6. Pune
  7. Ludhiana
  8. Chennai
  9. Shimla
  10. Jalandhar

Surprisingly, no Bangalore or Hyderabad feature in the list, while it is dominated by “B” cities like Chandigarh, Valparai, Ludhiana, Shimla and Jalandhar.

This just goes to show that there is more wealth in Towns than in the cities !

I am happy, Pune features in the list :)

My views are only comparing two cities listed bellow

Population in Mumbai (2009 estimate): 13,922,125
Population in Chandigarh (2009 estimate): 1,033,671

Mumbai is the most populous city and financial capital in India. This article is based on total weath devided by total number of people. With such stats, Mumbai made it to 5th. I think that is great.

Mr.Ramalingam your assumption of top 20 cities in india is somewhat good, But where comes the MADURAI in this top 20 list? where is COIMBATORE,NAGPUR,BHOPAL? thats really funny to think that ludhiana and bhubaneshwar are ahead of MADURAI. if you like madurai to be in the list , then there should be some industrialization.

Goa is such a tiny state and yet…..
Below figures indicates the “households with monthly income” more than “ten thousand” per month. and here its the GOA with 77% people earning more than “ten thousand” followed by Ludhiana and Delhi..

Panaji (GOA) 77%
Ludhiana 63%
Delhi 62%
Amritsar 60%
Jalandhar 60%
Chandigarh 57%
Pune 56%
Greater Mumbai 56%
Valparai 53%
Faridabad 51%

Thats the top ten cities with “highest family income”
In Goa atleast one of the family member earns more than 1 lakh p.a…its highest compare to rest of indian cities. also each of the goan household atleast have one PC and broadband or internet connection…..and also youngsters going abroad is much more In GOA..

It depends what you mean by “richest.”

If you mean highest spending per head, then it is Maharashtra. It contributes 15% of India’s industrial output and 13.2% of its GDP

If you mean highest income per head, then it is Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Territory of Delhi taken together. It contributes 8.17% to India’s total GDP.

If you mean economic, mineral and natural deposits, then I think it must be either Punjab or Karnataka.

In terms of average wealth and quality of life across the whole State population, then I’m sure it must be either Kerala or Goa.

beloved Indians, India’s development is not only in some cities. its real development have to start from every tiny villages. just think about the standard of our villages. illiteracy, poverty, castism, unemployment….also just think about slums and platform people of our great cities. current India’s development is fake. it is imbalanced and it is just an inflammation and not real. as in words of our former pres.abdul kalam we the students and youngsters can only change this rotten situation. not only colourful cinemas and pubs is youngsters spot. we hav to this folks.

These are ranking based oin consensus in 2001? What utter nonsense is that? Or did you mean Census? Just to point out how misleading such stats can be: Valparai 4th richest city on your list is a small town with less than a lakh population situated on the Tamilnadu Kerala border. I have been there. There are some 10 tea estate companies there abouts including Tata Tea. This is the only thing there. Most of the people there are tes estate workers drawing very low wages. Probably, if you calculate the turnover of the ten tea estate companies and divide by the population, it may make it on this list. But except for the Estate Managers and some traders, who may be middle class, the rest of the entire poulation are poor.

Bhubaneswar is most powerful city India in between 2015 because,In the year 2009 Odisha was second top Domestic Investment destination with Gujarat first and Andhra Pradesh in third place according to an analysis of ASSOCHAM Investment Meter (AIM) Study on Corporate Investments. Orissa’s share was 12.6 percent in total investment in the country. It received investment proposal worth Rs. 2, 00,846 crore during the last year. Steel and power were among the sectors which attracted maximum investments in the state. Major players like Arcelor-Mittal($12 billion), Vedanta Resources($2.1 billion), Tata Steel(Rs.15,400crore) , POSCO($12 billion), NTPC($12.65 billion), Mesco Steel($12.8 billion) and Bhushan Steel(Rs.5,828 crore) intend to invest .There are heavy investments coming in Odisha and Bhubaneswar being the capital captures the highest share of these investments. They are then further absorbed in developing real estate of the city.
The growing population of the city 19, 00,000 making it the 22nd largest urban centre in the country and the rising disposable incomes of its denizens led to high demand of residential property.
The entry of IT industries in the city is another reason for development of Bhubaneswar property market. The high paying Technology companies like Infosys, TCS, Wipro and IBM have raised the need for residential as well as commercial setups.
World Bank ranks Bhubaneswar as 3rd best city India to do business – (Doing Business in India 2009 report). Its strategic location on coastline and richness in minerals and natural resources makes it the most preferred investment destination for many.
Its emerging as the latest knowledge hub in India with several new public and private universities such as NISER, IIT, IIIT, National University, National Law University, AIIMS, Vedanta University, Sri Sri University, NIPER, and several other new institutions .The city aims to export software worth appox. $1billion by 2011-2012.

1)i see many people having tendency of regionalism(neither the country nor the earth & the human race or just the word “life”).this is a symptom of a being very small hearted in which there is a place for only a few certain people.one level 3 they are’nt worthy of being called indian,on level 2 they are’nt worthy of being called human,on level 1 they dont desrve to be refered as “living concious” since they are so much driven by other forces(leaders who are expert in dividing n brain washing u all),,either you change ur ways or you better detach yourself from india,,i gues n hope you ll be better alone

2)i also see some people who can be said to be very concerned for the upliftment of humans for the greater good,,,my humble sugestions to them,,”you are capable of making difernces,,the god made world needs you,,please go out of this self expresing and sharing on this social networking medium and bring those difernces in the real world, even if u wana share and make people aware through the facility of internet , think some big ways to pursue that

As of 2001 India census,[2] Chandigarh had a population of 900,635, making for a density of about 7900 persons per square kilometre. Males constitute 56% of the population and females 44%. The sex ratio is 777 females for every 1,000 males–which is the lowest in the country.

From Shinkansen,
2008 when I came in India, all India. I think “Punjab” with it’s fantastic cities like ‘Ludhian’ ‘Amritsar’ Jalandha’ ‘Chandigarh’ ‘Patiala’ are the awesum from other stat cities. Even, there is a Biggest diff. in villages of ‘Punjab’ and any other states. Punjab’s villages are as good as cities, there are all facitilies.
And Ludhiana have the amazing and world-level “Cars”. It’s amazing to believe that ‘Punjab’ is the part of India.
Its 100 years ago, not just cities includes villages and rural life.

we feel proud to be an indian, sing national anthem ,salute national flag , support national cricket team , yet people of one state are not ready to accept others ….we are definitely moving towards a collapse. one must understand that some people of a state are bad and corrupt and they bring bad name for whole state.
If we call ourselves indians then we must put our hands together and help them and me dream of our great leaders and freedom fighters true.

First,How we decide Wealthiest city?
According to me We should see that how much difference between wealth and poverty of in reference of all population. and also health service, Education level, income, employment. and we must keep an eye that how many people are happy with that city and like to live there? and also Government. If we see by economic view.

According to the August 8 report of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, the richest city in India is now Surat, ahead ofBangalore and Madras , with an average annual household income of Rs0.45 million (over $11,000 per year). 80 per cent of all diamonds sold anywhere in the world are polished in Surat ‘s 10,000 diamond units The only non-Jews in the Tel Aviv andJerusalem diamond bourse are Gujjus. Between 2004-5 and 2007-8 Surat’s middle class doubled in size and its poor reduced by a third. The fifth richest city in India is now Ahmedabad, ahead of Bombay and Delhi , and miles ahead of Calcutta . The percentage of man-days lost in Gujarat due to labour unrest is 0.42 per cent, the lowest in India . Of Gujarat ‘s 18,048 villages, 17,940 have electricity. Under Chief Minister Modi, the face of industrial Gujarat is changing. The world’s largest oil refinery is coming up in Jamnagar. Owned by Reliance, it already refines 660,000 barrels of oil a day and will double that this year. Thirty per cent of India ‘s cotton is grown in Gujarat , 40 per cent of India ‘s art-silk is manufactured in Surat , employing 0.7 million people. The world’s third largest denim manufacturer is Ahmedabad’s Arvind Mills. A KPMG report says 40 per cent of India ‘s pharmacy industry is based in Gujarat with companies like Torrent, Zydus Cadila, Alembic, Dishman and Sun Pharma. The state of Gujarat’s GDP has been growing at 12 per cent a year for the last 12 years, as fast as China ‘s. India’s wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani of Reliance, is Gujarati. Forbes says he is the world’s fifth richest man, worth $43 billion. Azim Premji of Wipro, is Gujarati. He is the world’s 21st richest man, worth $17 billion. Ten of the 25 richest Indians are Gujarati. Some of the best business communities in India — Parsis, Jains, Memons, Banias, Khojas and Bohras — speak Gujarati. The two great leaders of the subcontinent, the Mahatma and the Quaid, were both Gujaratis from trading communities. One a Bania, the other a Khoja. Gujaratis number 55 million, five per cent of India ‘s population living on six per cent of surface area, but hold 30 per cent of all Indian stock. Gujaratis account for 16 per cent of all Indian exports and 17 per cent of GDP. JAI Ho!

VIZAG city was identified as one of the ten fastest growing cities in the WORLD economically and demographically. The city has developed into a hub for many heavy industries. It is primarily an industrial city, apart from being a port city. It is also home to the Eastern Naval Command. Vizag is often referred to as The Jewel of The East Coast or The City of Destiny and is sometimes referred to as the “Goa of the East Coast.” Just like its west coast counterpart, it has beautiful virgin beaches, laterite hillocks, smooth roads and stunning landscape. Health-tourism is a fast developing industry.

Valparai is in the district of Coimbatore. So please change it as Coimbatore. The coimbatore is the 5 th main city of south India. This city is located in between Kerala , Karnataka and Tamil nadu. This will be better city for production and transport. Tis city has 6 mAlls and has three 5 star hotel namely le meridian , taj vivanta and the residency. The le meridian has the largest ball room in India. The le meridian in Coimbatore is the 100th branch of it. The coimbatore also has F3 and F4 racing track. And many more in Coimbatore.

Wow, this is such a stupid argument. Currently, all Indian cities are way behind in terms of infrastructure, per capita wealth, and education (relative to other world cities). Stop bickering, and perhaps try and achieve something – improve your city. More importantly, improve the thousands of villages in which the bulk of India’s population resides. Extend the same urban benefits to the those in the countryside. Just look at the People’s Republic of China for example; currently, even the poorest of rural Chinese laborers residing in the cities are able to get back home to their families in the countryside just in time for Spring Festival, using some of the world’s fastest and most advanced high-speed rail systems. For the Chinese, though they are diverse, provincial boundaries are absolutely meaningless. A city is not a world of its own to be relished – each city, with its beauty, wealth, and infrastructure, helps make the COUNTRY (yes, the country, not the PROVINCE) a better place. What do we have in India? A bunch of grimy, whining “regionalist” idiots who think their state has something which makes it the best in the world, or some other BS. Have some goddamn unity. Do you want another partition? No? Well, I suggest you behave in a more united fashion then. The Chinese are already giving the U.S. something to worry about. India? We’re still the punchline of diarrhea jokes (think of the “Delhi Belly” syndrome), and movies about slums (think Slumdog Millionaire). Further more, wouldn’t be nice if we could break out of the shackles of British colonialism and actuallt have a mutual language to communicate in besides English? Why do we hang on to this language so dearly? Why is the knowledge of English perceived as being superior to a knowledge of Hindi, or Tamil, or Assamese? If there was a way to bring together the citizens of India through a common language, native to the Subcontinent, I really think that would be one of the better developments of the past century. I’m a Tamizhan myself, but I simply wish people here in the South weren’t so strongly opposed to the mandatory learning of Hindi in schools; this is yet another sign of strong regionalism which needs to be eradicated. Mandating Standard Hindi as the lingua franca of the land would make communication easier, and more efficient, not to mention, it would greatly boost our sense of national strength and unity. Regional languages would not be lost – do you think Cantonese is lost? Do you believe the various regional languages of Spain, France, Italy, and China, are lost because of the mandating of Spanish, French, and Italian, and Mandarin, respectively as the presiding languages of communication? Clearly not. So why would such a thing occur in India?
Another point: India’s population is expected to be the world’s largest by the year 2020. Tell me, is this good or bad…?

OBVIOUSLY, IT’S A TRAVESTY. Do you think India will gain from such a boom in numbers? Again, that’s BS. As it stands, the vast majority of India’s people are not even close living “well”; adding more people to the mix will only aggravate the problem(s). And where is population growth most rampant? In the poorer states (mostly located in Northern India), where, if such a boom were to occur, we should get ready to see worse than sub-Saharan Africa conditions. I’m not even joking. So how exactly could we rid of this problem? Birth control? Education? More effective politicians? Mindset? How? It seems somewhat impossible now though, as we plunge headfirst into our own demise. You, the youth, are responsible for what happens to this nation over the next century. The effort starts at the grass-roots level; if you are to improve the nation, you must improve yourself, and in improving yourself, you will inevitably improve those around you. The politicians of modern India are tantamount to corrupt buffoons (read baboons). But, not all can be blamed on the politicians. Corruption also begins at the grass roots level, and spreads the system in an insidious manner. SO what will you do to curb this corrupt nature, seemingly ingrained into the psyche of Indians? Because, what you do, in unison with the actions of all other Indians, determines the quality of your cities, your life, and your country. What will you do from now until 2030 that will improve your city and nation? Claim how it’s better than other cities to support your stupid regional biases? Will you apishly shout “Punjab BEST!” or perhaps “Hydrebad RULEZZ”? Or will you strive forward, boldly accepting your city’s flaws, indeed, your flaws, and change its countenance? So go on, if we Indians wish to compete on a world stage, we must first stop competing each other, and start focusing on our collective development. Don’t compete with China. Don’t compete with Pakistan. Don’t compete with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, or Andhra Pradesh. Compete with yourself, find a suitable means for your improvement, and go about the duty of improving your city and country.

Yep, it’s a goddamn long post. But, I seriously needed to get these things off my chest. So if you would care to read it, and perhaps understand it for what it is, I encourage you to do so.

Thanks.

Bhubaneswar should come within top 10. Because it is superior than others in all respects such as education, IT sector, mines center, cleanness, greenery, weather & climate, Temples (for moral peace), communication with other metros, coastal, population density (not more crowded) and many more. A progressive administration in the state have attracted major investors to the state. Bhubaneswar now is the 5th fastest growing city and 3rd best city for doing business.
