No More New Telecom Service Providers, atleast for now !
The Telecom growth has spurred hordes of Companies across the globe to apply for providing telecom services in India. But, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has asked the federal government not to issue any new telecom licenses for now.
The reason – India doesn’t have enough radio bandwidth for all the new companies that have applied to provide telecom services. [source]
In 2007, TRAI removed the ceiling on number of companies that could provide telecom services in India, and nearly 122 new companies were added.
Mobile number portability to be operational by December 1st this year
We have been hearing news about mobile number portability through-out the year and finally we have a date.
According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman J S Sarma, mobile number portability would come by December 1 this year.
Mobile Number portability would be a real boon, especially to those who have been stuck with their current service providers, just because they are unable to change their existing number.
Here are a few advantages on number portability
- It facilitates consumers to choose across mobile operators, as it removes the inbuilt cost of a number change when moving to a new provider.
- Any number change involves a natural cost to the user, who would otherwise have to notify friends, family, partners and allies of their new number or re-print cards or stationary.
- With MNP, consumers can move in between operators, where they may get a better deal on tariffs or services with another operator.
- The service will be available to both pre-paid and post-paid subscribers.
