Twitter Report: The Dream Growth Story

By now most of you must be aware of the the “Twitter Hacked” storm that was being talk about everywhere on the net over last few days, specifically Techcrunch. Did you also know that Twitter gets close to $50 million of free publicity every month?

But why such a hysteria around twitter, and why so suddenly in last 4-5 months.

I must admit that I had created my Twitter account early in 2008, and started using it just 3 months back ! It was used earlier only for posting tweets of my new posts published. But with the dawn of this new year, the buzz on twitter started growing, and I joined the bandwagon as well somewhere around March-April this year.

 Sysomos has released quite insightful report on the growth of Twitter, and I will be sharing some key highlights of that report with you.

Twitter’s Sudden Growth in March-April this year

No it was not because I became active on twitter around that time, it was the uber-famous talk host Celebrity Oprah Winfrey (aka @oprah), who started using Twitter, making her first Tweet on her show with help from Twitter co-founder Ev Williams.

The popularity of Twitter also soared when Ashton Kutcher (aka @aplusk) waged a public race against CNN to be the first to have one million followers on Twitter.

Since the beginning of the year, 72.5% of Twitter users have signed up for the service. This includes 22.7% of total users in March and 19.7% in April.

What is the Age-Wise Distribution of Twitter users

Younger lot have embraced twitter much faster than their older counterparts. More than 81% users are 30 years or less !

Note: Only 0.7% of users disclosed their age, with younger users showing a higher probability of doing so. Still, the statistics suggest Twitter is growing in popularity among younger people.

What is the Average Twitter User following?

92.4% of Twitter users follow less than 100 people, while 97.8% of Twitter users follow less than 400 people. At the other end of the extreme, 0.94% of Twitter users follow more than 1,000 people.

How many Number of Followers does a Twitter use have?

Now this is the most surprising statistic (although in line with the previous stats) of all and probably discouraging because whooping 93.6% of Twitter users have less than 100 followers.
98% of users have less than 400 followers. Meanwhile, 1.35% of users have more 500 followers, and only 0.68% of more than 1,000 followers.

How Many Tweets per day?

85.3% of Twitter users update less than once/day; while only 1.13% Twitter users update more than average of 10 times a day.

Who are the most active Twitter Users?

Only a very small group of Twitter users account for the bulk of activity. The report points out that 5% of users account for 75% of all activity, 10% account for 86% of activity, and the top 30% account for 97.4%.

What are the applications that Twitter Users use?

More than half of Twitter users (55%) use something other than Twitter. TweetDeck is the most popular non-Twitter.com publishing tool with 19.7% market share, while Twitterfon had 4.5% and Twitterfeed 3.8% share.

Which are the top 10 countries using Twitter?

Yes, India does figure in the top 10 countries using twitter. However, USA alone takes the lion share with more than 62% twitter users, followed by UK, with close to 8% and Canada with 5.7%.

India has a measly .87% of total twitter users !
