Why no Indian startup were seen at TC50?

by Arun Prabhudesai on September 15, 2008

In last few days most of us have seen some or the other startup presentation, thanks to TC50 and Demo conferences held in US. More than 1000 startups applied for TC50 and around 52 were shortlisted and showcased.

I am not sure how many actually applied for this event, but, not a single Indian startup was seen at the event…Why?

Incidentally Japan had 5 finalists from the list of 52. Like me, many wondered why there were no Indian startups?

I strongly believe that Indian startups do not lack quality to be showcased at such events. Infact, I know a few startups who could easily have been in contention for winning the top position – then what exactly are the reasons?

I can straightaway think of a few:

  • Majority of Indian startups limit themselves to India and do not have any international appeal.
  • Most of these startups are not funded and mostly bootstrapped – so cannot procure funds needed to participate in such events.
  • Indian startups are unable to package their products well to make it attractive for global audience.
  • India startups do not see much of value generating from TC50

What are your thoughts?

I think the most imp reason is that our startups are still doing indian versions of global products and how do you showcase them? Also, as you pointed out, they do not think big when doing something and hence lack global appeal.

We applied but didn’t even get 1st round call.  We are not that bad (may be less prepared) as compared to quite a few who made it to the finals.

Abhi: have a look at Kreeo, and there are many like us trying to create a brand with global appeal.

Hi Arun,

I am not sure about the TC50 however Maverick Mobile Solution, not only made it to the Demo but also won an award. We at Nokia (Forum Nokia) are working closely with this company as we truly see a huge potential and helped them to go to Demo. Further more I would like to add that the one mechanism that we do lack is the lack of knowledge – of where to go, how to go and so on. I am sure the initiative that you have taken would turly enable the reader to educate about such platform.

There is not lack of quality and pure enthusiasm of Indian Startups, howerver they require the right guidance and platform. Hence, I would like to extend my help in addressing the needs of organization and inidividual working in the mobile space.

Best Regards
Shiraz Datta
