Iphone only a fortnight away – Indian Mobile users can buy Iphone through Airtel starting August 22nd

The date is out ! Indian mobile users can get their hands on iconic Apple Iphone starting August 22nd through Airtel Relationship centers across India. [BS]

The rumors had it that Iphone will available in Indian market sometime in September, but Airtel has given pleasant surprise to Indian mobile users by announcing an earlier date.

Although the date has been declared, the Airtel officials are still not commenting on what price Iphone will be available at. I am not really sure why Airtel has been so secretive about pricing even though customers will be able to buy them within next 15 days !

There may be 2 reasons for this – The street expectation for Iphone pricing is around 16k to 18k rupees and Airtel plans to price it above that range, which will dampen the spirits of general mobile users. It is very much possible that if announced earlier, mobile users may get enough time to think rationally and can opt for other cheaper routes to Iphone. The second reason may be they are still waiting to know what strategy Vodafone has for its Iphone pricing.

These are my personal opinions and I’d invite readers to share their comments.

True. They both are waiting for each other to declare pricing for Iphone. Both Airtel and Vodafone have a one-up strategy against each other on Iphone. Vodafone started pre-booking first, now Airtel have announced the dates first. Expect Vodafone to announce the iphone timelines within a week :-). My feeling is that the price will be around 16-18K, same range as that of iPod Touch. Already there are many negative message flow hapenning on iPhone feature (or lack of it) in the market. The general euphoria surrounding iPhone is reduced now.
