Do you seek approval for your startup Ideas? Only do it with right people!

by Arun Prabhudesai on December 18, 2007

I have read whole of lot articles suggesting aspiring entrepreneurs should talk about their ideas to as many people as possible.

How many of you have talked about your ideas to your friends, family or close ones and how many times have you got solid, honest and constructive feedback? I bet most of the times they have either reacted by telling positive things that you want to hear or disapproving it without even analyzing in depth.

I have had this experience time and again and I feel that it has more negative impact than positive.

Off-course you want validation and approval for your ideas, but it has to be done with right people. The ones who have been there – done that!

Yes, these people are rare, but a single validation (positive or negative) from them has far more weight than shallow or biased feedback of your friends and close ones. I do not intend to say that your friends will misguide you, they are great for friendship and will always have a biased outlook to your idea.

And honestly, ideas in itself have only 10% weight for the success of a good start-up, execution is what matters most and will decide the future success.

Infact, in most cases original ideas and plans do not even remain the same. They are constantly changing due to dynamic circumstances. Chances are that your end product will be vastly different than what you perceived it at the start of the project.

The best way to go about is to start building the concept with whatever idea you have.  Be open to changing the direction of the business model, but don’t seek approval or validation from anyone other than from people who are in a position to give constructive feedback based on their past experiences.
