Purplenova FunCaster: Share full multimedia content on Web2.0 sites without uploads

by Arun Prabhudesai on December 14, 2007

Purplenova, who earlier launched innovative PC based Web Server application, have launched FunCaster, that allows users to share photos, videos and host of other content directly from Internet connected PC. Users can share all the content without uploading to any third party server.

I see Funcaster to have great utility for users who have lot of content to share and either do not want upload it to any third party server or want to share it selectively without compromising on privacy. Not only is Funcaster of great utility, it is extremely easy to setup even for a novice.

Just download the setup and install. Once installed, your internet connected PC will host all the multimedia content that you want to share.

Funcaster Widget

FunCaster allows you to share the content by way of a widget that could be embedded on most social networking and blogging platform. The FunCaster desktop client allows to designate content on the user’s PC that is to be displayed through the widget. Only the designated content is displayed, and sharing can be turned on or off at any time from the desktop client itself. Viewers who visit the social networking site do not need any additional software in order to view the content, when using any of the commonly used Internet browsers such as IE, Mozilla, Opera, etc.

To publish photos, videos and other content, user just needs to drag-n-drop the file that need to be published into the Purplenova desktop client window.

Funcaster comes with 2 additional features:

FunCaster BillBoards:

FunCaster BillBoards allow users to publish a single message, a greeting, a video or a photo from your Desktop client. Once published the message will appear instantly on all the BillBoards. This is especially useful when you are not publishing other stuff from your PC

FunCaster Funfeed:

A Funfeed is an automatically-created RSS feed of your desktop content. Your friends can include this Funfeed in their Email readers (Yahoo!, GMail, Hotmail, etc) and they will be able to view the files you drag-n-drop into FunCaster. This is like setting up your own private network with the closest of your friends.

Funcaster Conclusion:

In this age of Web2.0 where content publishing and sharing is increasingly becoming important, products like FunCaster are of great utility. Ability to share content without uploading it to 3rd party server is a great feature that will attract quite a few privacy/ security freaks. FunCaster will also appeal to causal and novice user due to its simplicity. On negative side, as with any PC based hosting application, you need to have “always on” Internet connectivity and a fast connection, especially considering that users will be mostly sharing high bandwidth content like photos and videos.

Overall, FunCaster is a great application that will appeal users and a very good addition to their existing PC based Web Server Application.

My only query – Who are the people behind FunCaster ? I did not see any place where these details were available on Purplenova site!
