Do you know Sabeer Bhatia’s latest Internet venture?

by Arun Prabhudesai on November 20, 2007

In last couple of days, I have come across various media sites reporting that Hotmail founder Sabeer Bhatia will be announcing his newest Internet venture (product) in couple of days. He mentioned this at the sidelines of Nasscom Annual Product enclave.

SAAS (Software as a Service) is becoming increasingly popular thanks to Web2.0 technologies. Companies like Zoho and Google are blurring the line between Web and Desktop applications.

Will Sabeer Bhatia’s to-be-launched-product on similar lines?

He has given hints that the product will be even bigger than hotmail. It is in the online space and is targeted at mass use. It was developed in Bangalore by a team of around 100 engineers.

Another interesting set of information is that it will be launched by Instacoll, a Bangalore-based software product company of which Bhatia is the chairman. Currently Instacoll has the suite of products that provide services like real time document sharing and offering Microsoft Office online.

After bumper success of Hotmail and multi-million dollar sale to Microsoft, Sabeer has tried hands at various online ventures with very limited success. Infact, one of his ventures Arzoo was shut down before re-launching again few months back. Apnacircle and BlogEverywhere are couple of his other ventures that have been launched in recent times.

So whats your take…what will it be?

“He has given hints that the product will be even bigger than hotmail.”

That seems not too realistic. Even if you are Bill Gates, you cannot start and get success in a venture in the web 2.0 so easily. The competition is so fierce.

We will wait and see the product from Bhatia.

I feel that should be something that will relate to the Nano City project in Haryana that he is working on. May be with Property? Just like they revamped the Arzoo.com website to travel booking facility with additional services like online car hire, visa information, etc.. and in fact they also accept payment through ITZ cash card! may be will add another service on Arzoo with Property ;-)

I think rehashing existing ideas will not work. yeah there is some money to be made but not on the same multi-hundred million dollar level as hotmail.

hopefully he’ll come up with something original.

@Niyaz you are right, that seems to be a bit of exaggerated statement, however, what he may be saying is that it has potential to become bigger than hotmail…
@Ashwin, honestly I was thinking too that it must be something to do with Nano City that he announced couple of months back…however, as he mentioned that it is pure internet play, that is doubtful…hey nice reviews btw…you should do such more often..
@LoD…Are there any original ideas left…I am sure it will be a twist to existing ideas..
