So what are you planning to do today?
If you are yet to decide, you may want to visit KyaKare, an online / mobile event listing site that gives you the details on the various events taking place in your city.
Currently they are fully operational in Mumbai and Delhi with Bangalore and Kolkata being in Beta.
About KyaKare service:
The service is quite useful and it would help many by way of giving options to decide what they want to do next. Till now most of us have been used to browsing the newspapers or seeing the flyers/ posters around to know what events are going around in the city, but with KyaKare, a user can access it through Internet or thru mobile phone.
I could not access the mobile version, but it sure seems to be quite attractive, especially when you are out of your house and need to quickly know the events happening around you.
Also, for a fairly new site, they have good number of event listings.
I tried to look up something for November 24th weekend and I did find around 50 events listed for that day. Excellent!
The RSS and bookmark is also a great feature that KyaKare has.
Normally, making this kind of sites user friendly is very important for success of the site, at the same time quite challenging given the breadth of categories and number of listings to be displayed. When the user lands on the site for the first time, he needs to be able to access the required events in less than 2-3 clicks. This is where I found KyaKare a bit lacking. I would not say they are not user-friendly, but there presentation surely could have been better.
What I would have liked to see:
- The event presentation for any given day is a bit overwhelming, given the number of categories. The presentation has to better with use of calendar module (probably using AJAX / Flex) where users do not have to spend time browsing/ searching for an event.
- The calendar should be right upfront, instead of the right column, and even more prominent.
- There has to be a way to show more popular events upfront on the front page, instead of random events at every refresh. This could easily be done based on running hits analysis. The event categories that are more popular should be given more weight.
- What is with this ‘today’ thing. For events of earlier or later date, it still shows as today’s event. Thats confusing.
- The search too, has to be more prominent that includes a calendar, instead of a wild card search.
- Although, KyaKare has RSS and Bookmark features, an event email delivery feature could be quite useful.
- How about a customized event widget to be embedded on third party website!. Remember they are viral and help building traffic.
- Actually KyaKare tagline says- ‘Discover and Share events’ – How do I share? Is it through bookmarks and RSS? Am I missing something here?
- Setting up an event reminder through SMS would also be a great feature to have.
- Finally, a feature that I would have really loved to see, integration of site with outlook calendar and Online Google calendar (something like a button saying ‘add to outlook’ or ‘add to Google calendar’ under each event).
Some questions:
- Who are the people behind KyaKare? I did not find much information about them after looking around the site
- What is the monetization strategy? Is KyKare planning to go the paid listing way, or use online advertisements to make money out of this venture?
- Is KyKare solely dependent upon visitors listing the events or are KyaKare personnel populating them?
- Are visitor contribution manually checked or authenticated?
- How fast is KyaKare planning to add more cities?
Conclusion:
Although, there are number of classified and event listing sites, I think KyaKare has put an honest effort and hence such a detailed review. They have the potential to be popular, just that they need to keep adding web2.0 features and make it more viral.
